So, I have another question (although I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to it but I need backing on this one)...
I have trained both of my dogs that the command to release them is "okay". Works fine. No problem.
The problem I have is that for some reason my husband has decided that he'll use "release" instead. No rhyme or reason - I think he just thinks it sounds "cooler" than just "okay". I've tried to gently suggest that "okay" is the release word and "we" don't want to confuse them.
Thoughts? Ideas? Put my husband in a crate while I train?
I use "OK" I won't use it again, couple of incidents at the park with the kids when I had the puppers in a stay and I told my kids it was "OK" to do something and the two puppers exploded, trying to find the equivalent of "OK" in German

HELP ME!!!
I'm sorry - I guess I should have made my question a little clearer. My question is whether or not this is potentially confusing to the dogs (JD mostly) since they've been trained to "okay" all this time to now have two words use to release them?
I have a similar predicament. I trained "get off people and furniture" with the word "Off!" and I trained Down with "Down."
Now another in the family is using "Down" for "get off the couch" and "Lay" for Down.
And they won't listen to me. The dog still does the commands but the performance is slower, I'm sure she's just going by body language and tone of voice now instead of the command.
It is always best that one word is used, however one of our dogs grew up with "okay" being the release word and Falcon arrived knowing "break". Falcon will only break on that word, but Sadie figured out that both words mean the same thing.
Does your dog know release? If so, just drop okay and don't fight it on this one. At least you'll be consistant with the one word. And it is a word which is used less often in normal language...
