My parents have a 8 year old male Havaneses who is very sick and I'm wondering if any of you could maybe help. In the beginning of January my step dad took Diego in for a regular check up at that time the vet noticed he had a slight heart murmur also during this visit he was given a intra-nasal Bordetella vaccine. My step dad asked if the vaccine was really necessary and they told them he probably would not get bordetella because he is not kenneled and is the only dog in the home but said they recommend it in case he would ever have to be kenneled in an emergency (I wish he would not of listened to them but I think vets a pretty good at scaring people into these worthless vaccines.)
Anyways my parents really could not remember how soon Diego started coughing after his visit but about a week and a half later he was coughing all night and day. They took him back to the vet, I told my step dad to ask about the vaccine when he went in to see if this was the cause of his problem, the vet said possibly and they gave him antibiotics. His cough has not gone away and this morning Diego would not eat and when he got to work he was stuggling to breathe so my step dad rushed him to the vet. The vet said they think he has Palmonary Edema and he has fluid in his lungs. My folks are taking him to a specialist who we have used in the past and think they can help more then our local vet but he can't get in until friday.
I find it hard to believe that this all just by chance started after his vaccination and wonder if nasal vaccine could have aspirated his lungs. Of coarse the vet does not think the two are related.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated my mom is a mess so sad.
Is pulmonary edema something that can be treated some website say if caught early it can be some say it's just a matter of time.

I'm so sorry he is so sick
I don't know about pulmonary Edema, but I did have a dog get full blown Kennel Cough after a bordatella vaccine, the vet was very quick to admit it was very likely due to the vaccine.
Have they done chest x-rays?

I posted a link on what Pulmonary Edema is. Its hard to tell if the vaccine caused it since he already has a heart mumer. And yes it hate it when the vet pressuses you to do a stupid vaccine that your dog will probably not need. I stopped vaccinating my dogs for lymes because where I live I have a higher chance of my dogs getting Anaplasmosis (tick born diease)and they are treated the same way one month of doxyciclne.

The bordatella vaccine HAS to be given if the dog is to be kenneled, in most states its required by law. BUT if he is not going to be kenneled there is no need for it and most vets wouldn't automatically do it. I can't recall off hand or not if the bordatella nasal vaccine is a live vaccine or not-if it is your dog can come down with verion of kennel cough but it likely would not be contagious. If it is a killed vaccine then there is no way your dog can get kennel cough from it.
Pulmonary edema is a true emergency, it is basically fluid pooling in the air sacs in the lungs. It can be treated usually with Lasix or another diuretic that helps decrease fluid volume within the body, sometimes morphine as given as well because this causes vasodilation which again helps reduce fluid volume. I hope your little dog is all right.

This for me means "new vet immediately regardless of how this turns out": "My step dad asked if the vaccine was really necessary and they told them he probably would not get bordetella because he is not kenneled and is the only dog in the home but said they recommend it in case he would ever have to be kenneled in an emergency (I wish he would not of listened to them but I think vets a pretty good at scaring people into these worthless vaccines.)" if it was as strong-armed as it sounds. I can't even imagine vaxing a single dog who is not kenneled or in some other kind of group of dogs for bordetella, and in fact I never do this vaccine period, but the real point is, did the owner protest and get coerced? If so, goodbye, with the reason made clear first. JMO.
But priority now is this dog. Brent, can you clarify if he is still struggling to breathe but waiting for a two-days-away vet appointment? I think this is an emergency, and can't wait until Friday. Here is another overview:
http://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/respiratory/c_multi_pulmonary_edema
What I was saying above about the vet applies, IMO, no matter what the cause was of the dog's condition.
Please let us know. This must be very frightening and I imagine your parents are distraught. I'm so sorry.

Thanks for your help everyone... They put him on Lasik and his breathing seems to be doing better right now.(He has urinated about 4 times within the last few hours not sure if this is a side affect from the drug or if he is just feeling better he has not wanted to go out much lately) My mom said that they did an x-ray and all his organs are functioning properly. I'm not sure how closely they have looked at his chest but the specialist will probably order new x-rays Friday cus our vets usually are not good enough quality for them.
Connie I think your right about our vet I just got a postcard for my personal dog the other day saying my dog needs several vaccines including Bordetalla I'm going to see how they treat me when I go in and tell them I do not want them and evaluate the situation myself. I have never had any severe health issues with my dog so I have only used them to get heartworm meds from and had his nails clipped before I started doing it myself. After what has happened I'm going to sit down with them and see where they stand on vaccines and raw diets etc. I really struggle in Saint Joseph to find vets I trust as well as trainers. I think I will start looking around the Kansas City Area.

The Lasix will make him pee, that's the point, it is clearing fluid from the lungs, it is a great drug to clear fluid from lungs.
If he does not improve steadily or begins to appear short of breath you will need to seek help. Pulmonary edema is nothing to fool around with.
Sounds like he is improving, which is great.

I shouldn't have typed "that's the point" it was rude of me, I apologize -- and your vet should have explained what the action of the medication was to be as well.
Lasix is a great drug and is used for heart patients with fluid accumulation due to heart failure so it is a good pick for a dog with a murmur as well.
Apologize again -- I've been out in some ghastly weather all day and am feeling
cranky!
Hope your little dog does well --
