last weekend I sent a message re: cody, he had thrown up four times, and was shivering. took him to the emergency vet had blood work done and xray all were ok no blockages, blood work normal. One week later, he is fine during the day except for mornings when he wakes up. He wants to eat vegetation really bad, and if he doesn't get his breakfast quickly, he does throw up what looks like bile, no blood, small amount of bile. Today the emergency vet called me back and wants Cody to come in and see an internist and have more ultra sounds. We will have to get a referral. We do not have a regular vet right now since our vet passed away suddenly-he was a holistic vet. So, this will take some time. Hoping to call my old vets office and catch someone there- they have closed temporarily hoping to get a new vet.
Does anyone know of safe things to give a dog to just ease any inflamation in the stomach? I want to help him while we are waiting to see the internist. Oh, Cody is playing and acting fine after the morning breakfast. has anyone dealt with something like this with their dog?
Sorry this is so long, we are frustrated and concerned for our little dog. He is about 4 years old and weighs 18 lbs. and is a parsons terrier mix.
Thank you for any input you can give me. Sharon

Have you tried a bland diet?
Or a small late night snack to help avoid the bile vomit in the mornings?
Yogurt is almost always good for settling out a messed up digestive system, but I don't know that I would want to introduce anything new until you knew what the problem was.
Is he on raw? If not we have been using Pepcid for our old girl who was having tummy issues and it has really helped.

I would second the tagamet. Also, perhaps a light late meal in the evening. This complaint is not uncommon.

Yes I have tried a bland diet. Much to his dismay, boiled chicken with rice. and I add plain greek yogurt to his diet, morning, and at noon, and his evening meal.
( he is eating about 3 meals a day just since he became sick, since his meals must be small. I break them into 3 )
I tried feeding him later that didn't work, but tonight I am going to try and feed him a late night snack.
He used to be on raw until last week. He used pepcid ac when he was in the hospital with the mystery illness that nearly killed him in o9. Tonight I tried a little bit of pepto. 1/2 a childs dose. 1/2 teaspoon.
Thank you for your response. My husband and I are just sad for him. We want to help him, but you might imagine how expensive a specialist is. Not that we do not want to pay for him, last weekend we paid $500.00 to take him. and in 09 when he nearly died, we paid over 6000.00 but that has emptied our emergency fund. So we are trying to gather info to see if some of the home remedies will work and ease his intestinal track.
I am hoping pepto will help and tonight a tiny snack.
Usually cody doesn't like to get up before 8:00 from his crate. So tomorrow morning I am getting him up early, at about 7:00 and see if I can beat the nausea with breakfast. Today it was 7:30 when his tummy became upset.
Anyway thanks again. Sharon

Sharon, 2 of my dogs had GI issues and had some incidents of vomiting in the morning just like you described. I gave them a Tsp of lowfat yogurt or skimmed chicken soup (chicken+water at first, chicken+water+carrots+celery after several good days, +rice, if needed) after getting the vet's approval.
I don't give them non-fat yogurt because they won't eat it without additions.

thank you Ana. I really appreciate your advise. This dog cody has been a challenge, with his high drive and fearlessness, then almost dying from something, the vets at the specialists never found out exactly what, to now his tummy problems. He is the most amazing dog! I am so glad we stuck with him. He has got real heart. I am praying we can get this solved. We were hit with a tax bill, so our finances are a little short. but we so want to help him. Thanks sharon

Early morning bile vomiting is not very unusual....I have been giving my dogs a natural dog cookie at night at bedtime for this reason for years.
My female used to do this pretty freequently & my male occasionally, until I started feeding dinner a but later & adding to cookie at bedtime. This has seemed to solve the problem. But all dogs will occasionally vomit (maybe a few times a year or so) for whatever reason. If it is at all freequent then you need to investigate.
I also would not feed any kind of antacid with a raw diet. Dogs need all their stomache acids to digest the bone etc in a raw diet properly.
I hope all goes well for Cody.

That's what I would do, too.
To add to the already-given good suggestions, he is not on raw now, right? Just to clarify that you don't want to give an antacid while he is on raw.
(That is, if you do decide to give an antacid, you stop raw feeding. The two huge canine anti-food-pathogen defenses are their caustic stomach acid and their fast trip through from the mouth to the other end. I never want to screw up either one, so no antacids with raw diets and no artificially slowing down the passage of raw by combining it with kibble.)

Faroh has empty stomach syndrome. I'm waiting for him to grow out of it, but he might not. I literally toss a handful of food in his crate as I go to bed at night, or he will vomit in the morning, guaranteed. Since he's just 6 months old, I also recently tried to cut out his "lunch" with the same result.
It was suggested to me to either give him a snack at night, or pepcid. You might have luck doing the same, does he have a history of GI problems?

I do feed him a raw diet, but right now I am not. He has not had a raw diet since last saturday, not this one but the one before.
Today he did not throw up this morning. I gave him a late night snack, and a little pepto, very little. He woke up and I fed him, he went out and didn't throw up. (I took him out to potty) So today he has eaten three small meals and has had not loose stool and no vomiting. So, it seems like he is better. You can tell he isn't quite as active as usual but doing fine.
Thanks for the advice. sharon
