Can anyone explain to me why my rott and sisters husky are eating dirt? The dirt is clay and never been treated with any chemical and yet both dogs are eating it. My rott is fed Caniday all life stages and the husky is fed crap food.
I don't get why they are doing this, is it that they are lacking something in their diet? It is beyond me why they are doing this.

Have you seen any of the threads here about pica? There's a ton of discussion.
I don't mean you won't get replies; I just mean you won't want to limit your reading to this thread when there's so much here already. (Expand the date range in "search" to a few years.)

Clay is dangerous; it can cause an impaction requiring surgery. You'll want to disallow access to it.

Thanks Connie, I looked it up on-line and you were right on target. Thank goodness since I notice him licking the dirt several months ago, I haven't left Buddy outside without being out there with him or watch him from the window and tell him to "leave it" when he starts to lick the dirt. I will tell my sister about her dog since she picks up small pieces and eats it.
Don't know how she will handle this since she is at work at day all day but she will have to come up with some solution.
I have to watch Logan because he will do this. He was very underweight hen I got him and I believe it was from that. He would even eat pine cones, chew rocks, eat dirt or clay. I think from past starvation he still does this. I just intervene and provide him with a healthy alternative and restrict access to the clay. Boredom seems to trigger it for him or if he's hungrier than normal.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
