Hello I have switch my dogs to an all Raw diet. This is our second week into the new diets. A local store here in town had Chicken leg quarters for 70 cents a pound. I have two 70 pound pit bulls and I'm terrified to feed them the large chicken leg bones. I have read the Raw Dog Food book by Carina Beth MacDonald, and I haven't finished the Raw & Natural Nutrition for dogs by Lew Olson yet. When cutting the quarters up I get really sharp pieces of bone. I'm just worried my dogs will get cut up in their GI tracks and have internal bleeding. And I know people feed whole chickens to their dogs....It's really a whole comfort level thing. Anyone else feed whole chickens or the Leg quarters to their dogs?
I do and Ive never had a problem with the 80lb dogs or the 8lbs dogs. Im sure the experts will weigh in but I dont think theres a problem with chicken bones unless they are cooked.

Raw chickens bones are safe to feed. It is the staple of most raw-fed dogs' diets.
That's not to say that there are no risks at all. There's a risk in everything, including kibble. But the risks of a raw chicken bone are pretty small. Commercially raised meat chickens are slaughtered at, like, 10 weeks of age. Their bones are pretty soft.
If you can't bring yourself to feed leg quarters, chicken backs are made of softer, smaller bones that are even easier to digest. And backs (if you can find them) are even cheaper than leg quarters.
It's not just chicken quarters. (Also, the amount the dog gets is related to the weight of the food, not the number of pieces. And you may decide to begin with backs, which are softer-boned and good "beginner bones.")
But the main reason it would be good to start a new thread in this particular case is that it sounds like the O.P.'s dog has a G.I. problem, so we need to stay with his topic.
I promise you'll get help. In your new post, tell us what books (if any) you've read about the raw diet.
Thanks!
Thanks for the support. My boy's had a couple of black stools, so I've been a bit concern with there being a problem already.
When, how many, and what do you mean by black? Tarry?
Were they liquid, pudding, formed logs, or what?
Straining?
Has there been a normal brown log poop since?
Sorry for the pictures but here you go. The black ones are from yesterday and day before. The brown one is from this morning, and as you can see there is blood in it. And yes he seems to be straining. This morning I gave them their first leg quarters.
