Kasey had to have emergency dental surgery a little while ago. We were playing ball and he got so focused on getting it, that he smashed, mouth first into a concrete porch. Two of his top incisors got completely broken off right below the gum line. He was running in circles and panting from the pain.
It was 4pm, so I called my normal vet and she referred me to a dental vet (I was seeing a lot of dollars signs before my eyes by now). I called the dental vet and fortunately he was having a slow afternoon and told me to bring him right over. Fortunately again, he said that because I got him in so quickly they would be able to do, what they call, a vital pulpotomy. They take out some of the pulp and can leave the nerves and roots so the tooth stays alive. Then they put a big filling in and around it. If I wouldn't have gotten him there right away he would have had to have them pulled. He's a lot more comfortable now thanks to pain pills.
Man, who knew ball playing could be so dangerous!!! and expensive!

OMG poor guy! That's awesome they saved his teeth. Fetch does have it hazards. Logan bloodied his nose once playing fetch. He ran into a tree...ouch...came back with the ball and blood running from his nose. He has hurt him self landing after leaping in the air, once he landed with his legs all splayed. It took him a sec to shake it off, ouch...and then he hit his neck on the wheel barrow, it hurt him really bad because he laid down and looked whimpy...it was even swollen (a knott). I gave him arnica montana. It was just the way the kong bounced and he hit it.

Ouch! So sorry to hear Kasey had a collision with the porch, that does sound awfully painful. Great you did get him in as soon as you did and
good to hear they were able to save the teeth.
I have often feared my dogs would do the same thing on our brick fence.
Sending Kasey healing thoughts and hope he recovers quickly!

I made two trips to the dentist with Brio. Almost $3.5K. Insurance paid less than half the tab.
The bride decided, you can appreciate who is the decision maker in the house, to squirrel away money in the amount of the premiums, and it turned out to be a good decision - over time.
Except for last fall when two dogs were at the emergency clinic at the same time. Almost $10K. One made it, one didn't.
My GP lamented that he should have become a vet.

I'm so sorry to hear about Kasey's accident, Lori, but if it had to happen, I'm glad it turned out as well as it did.
I think it can be quite easy for a dog to get hurt while playing. Just yesterday, I was out playing Chuck-It in the yard and one of mine narrowly missed crashing head-first into a tree.
Get well soon, Kasey!

Storm has broken teeth on three occasions by playing fetch. Now he only gets it on grass with no trees etc. around.

He's not real great today. Kasey is the kind of dog that you never know if he's in pain or not - but not this time. He's pretty drugged though, so that helps him to be able to rest. He was very restless last night - seems pacing and panting is his sign of pain. The vet called to check on him this morning and said to give him the pain med every 8 hours instead of 12 until he is more comfortable.
He should be feeling a lot better by Sunday I think. It's so sad when they just lay there and look at you with those sad eyes!
