Why did did you name your dog(s) its name and what does it mean?
Logan was the first name to come to mind and the only one I really though about calling him. His name was Phantom but it wasn't him. Logan is a Gaelic name mostly known as a Scottish name but may have origins in Ireland (Scots were from Ireland). Logan means "small cove or servant" in Gaelic but in Chinese "from the hollow".
Sport (my chow/setter) was the named I used after a wolf named Sport. My parents didn't let me have a wolf or even a husky. She was true to her name though and did very well in agility trials, was very athletic.
Ten (GSD) short for Tenacious. She was that.
Ali (Dutchie) was also a short for something....Ali-gator! LOL
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog. |

Registry name Elko Aus Der Rittermark, he was an E litter pup, I loved his dad "Brago" who is a great dog. The perfect family protection beast, has a fantastic IFF detector. So I chose "Drago" and so far Drago shares all the traits of his dad

Inherited Sadie, tho I may one day drop her last name (Billiot) from her pedigree. That was the last name of the breeder that I got her from.
My (our) last dog's (RIP, my baby) name was Tera. My son, who was eight at the time, misunderstood a commercial referencing a Italian term. He wanted to give her the name Sera, thinking it meant beautiful, but thought they were saying Tera. I let it slide, but some know-it-all bigmouth pointed out his mistake and he wanted to change it. I sat him down and pointed out that Tera was a beautiful, unique name and she already knew it, so he decided that Tera it would stay.
My first dog of my very own was a goofy yellow lab. I named him Buford, after Jackie Gleason's character in "Smoky and the Bandit", Buford T. Justice.
Growing up, we had a friend who always said he wanted to name a dog Bear. He got a chow that looked just like a bear, but ended up naming it Mule. Since Bear wasn't taken, when our family got a chow, we named him Bear.

We've got River who is named after a character in the TV series Firefly, which if you haven't see you should stop everything and watch. We chose it because she is a spaz action hero. We also have Lyra, from Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass trilogy. We wanted a litter fire-ball adventurer doggy name. Both are tough bada#% female characters =) (even though neither do is tough...)

Cinco was dog #5, and adopted on Cinco de Mayo.
Jack was chosen as the most un-poodle name I could think of.
Ellie is short for her registered name Adele vom Noble Lowen.
Fanny is short for her registered name Cardiridge Myffanwy Antics.
Luca was selected because we'd just returned from a trip to Italy and were in an Italian mood.

I also have a Logan, and in his case it came about only because my husband and I came up with a short list of boy dog names we liked, and it was about the only one we agreed on. Since the breeder allowed us to choose his registered name, he is officially Lyndobe's Lo And Behold. I wanted his registered name to have at least part of his call name in it. He often gets called Lo, anyway, or Logi, or Hey Lo (Halo -- yeah, right!)
Natasha got her name pretty much the same way. We both just liked it. Her name is usually shortened to Tasha or Tash.
My previous dog (the love of my life) was named Savanna. I got the idea from a character on a TV show. She wasn't named after the character; it just so happened that I liked the name.
Before that we had a Maxwell or just Max. We were driving around and talking about what we would name the puppy, when we passed Maxwell Street. Not very original, I know, but it suited him well.

Hootie, KC name Juennerfly Avocet – because Pointers have such huge hooters, noses to us Brits, not the famous bars with the, ahem – girls that you chaps have over there! Juennerfly was the litter prefix, and Avocet because he has a black head like the bird, getting a bit grey now though bless him....
Bonnie AKA Bon-Bon, KC name Bonnygate Jump The Gunn, as in Gunns ‘n’Roses – we got her at 6 months so didn’t have the heart to change her name! Bonnygate was the breeders prefix and Jump The Gunn because they were all Guns ‘n’ Roses fans!
*Sugar, SABT name Jannik Sugarplum To The Manor Born – so called by me because she was so sweet!
*Kaiser, SABT name Jannik Kaiser-Bones – we got him at 8 months so again, didn’t feel right changing it
*Harry, still miss you my darling, SABT name Jannik Harry Brown To The Manor Born – wanted a proper blokes name for our boy
*Jannik is the breeder’s name, and ‘To The Manor Born’ was our addendum as we lived on Manor Road when we brought them home and I wanted to give them a grand name!

Toni- short for Antonia vom Kaiserhaus
Cat- short for Caterina vom Kaiserhaus
Drift- AKC name is Chasidy vom Leerburg- called Drift because as a pup she had balance problems and "drifted a little to the right" She was originally called Drifter, we just shortened it a little.
Tyra- came with the name. My brother named her after Tyra Banks.
Shyner- named when one of the girls that found her wanted to name her Blacky, but I said we need to spell it with an I. She misunderstood and asked if I wanted to name the dog Black Eye. 5 teen girls shouted SHINER at the same time- we just modifed the spelling to make her special.
Next dog will be named either River or Serenity- after Paul's favorite characters in the series Firefly.

Kipp - I was looking for a traditional Border Collie name (usually simple, one syllable names) that wasn't too common. I added the extra p on the end to make the spelling look more masculine.Afterwards I find out that the spelling is the same as the old English name which means "pointed hill" Kipp is prick eared so I guess it fits well! His registered name is simply Gus - but he is sooo not a Gus.
Kenzi - the name the rescue gave her was Sprite. Cute and fits (a sprite is a cute, elfin creature) But to me Sprite = soft drink. I played around with a few names, but kept coming back to Kenzie. Simple, but not too common. I dropped the e at the end to make it unique. FWIW, Kenzie is of Scottish origin, means "fair" and traditionally male. When I found that out I thought about naming her something different, but I loved the sound of the name so I went with it!

Suzuki viola - Named after the string method of teaching and Viola, the instrument I play. I use Zuki for short
Keiko storm of Symphonies of Hope- My mother was reading a book a few days before we brought him home and she wanted to name him that. Storm was just what we picked out that would go good and also reflected on how wild he was. Symphonies of Hope since that is us.
