Hello how can I use or introduce the ecollar to a 13week old malinois.. I have been working him with markers food and a bit of tug.. He seems ready for verbal commands. I do have experience with the ecollar. But never with a pup this young. But this breed is different smarter faster. I want to continue food, markers but include the ecollar.
I personally use e-collars on my dogs....but NOT on pups.
There are way to many ways to train positively with dogs & pups especially & it's a long time down the road before I'm 'proofing' dogs to the point that I want to used corrections. I never use corrections on pups. Just no need to.
You say he is just NOW seems ready for verbal commands & you want to use an e-collar to enforce them?!!! SERIOUSLY?!!!
You have a long way to go in training before you are at a point that your dog is ready for any corrections.
Get some of the Mike Ellis DVD's on training & learn how to move on in your training with your pup.
Just because the pup learns faster, doesn't mean that you should start correcting him. You mal may not be too forgiving if you make any mistakes. Mals arn't the most forgiving dogs out there. They are very reactive & yes, learn fast...the good & the BAD. You may do irreparable damage to you relationship with this pup with an ill-place correction.
Thank you for the reply. What Michael Ellis videos do you recomend? I have the food and tug video. Grat videos.. Can't I use a low level stim at the same time I use the yes marker?
(Just reading the descriptions of Chapters 1, 2, and 3 will show you that using a remote collar is NOT a matter of "using a low level stim at the same time you use the yes marker." No reputable trainer would suggest such a thing.)
The Advanced Concepts in Motovation DVD is great! I got that about a year ago.....although my dogs were already trained with markers (I have been to several Ellis seminars over the years..starting back in 2004). The DVD has alot of great tips.
Junior: "Can't I use a low level stim at the same time I use the yes marker? "
Why would you want to or hope to acheive in doing so? If that is how you are planning on using am e-collar...You don't really have any concept on how to use an e-collar properly either as in a correctrion method of training or as in an advoidance training method. I also have to question your understanding of the concepts of markers & positive training with that idea. I think that you need to lose the idea of using an e-collar entirely until you actually know how to use one properly. You are going to DAMAGE your puppy!
I believe that Michael has an e-collar video also. But I pesonally feel that there are better ways to work with a puppy that young then with an e-collar. For the puppy, it should be fun & upbeat & bonding with you time. I don't see that as your objective from your posts. I just see someone in a big rush to get to the point of a well trained dog. It doesn't happen that way. It take time...ALOT of time, patience & more time & patience to raise & train a puppy into a well trained, happy, bonded to you, adult dog. JMO

Late is way WAY better than too early. (WAY better!) JMO! Especially making any kind of mistake and triggering superstitious behaviors.
