Just musing here...
Since the topic of naming a dog has come up on another thread, I had cause to think of how dog names are chosen.
When I got Sadie, it occurred to me that she should have been named Dragonfly, as she is very passionate in her pursuit of them (and what a sight to behold!). When I was thinking pof breeding her to obtain a puppy for SchH, I was naturally going to name one of her progeny "Mosquito Hawk vom Sadie Billiot", call name "Skeeter".
Even though I won't be breeding Sadie, if I get a little schutzhund monster, I will be naming him "Skeeter". I will be chuckling to myself when people speak of Skeeter biting the decoy.

We named our latest Kelpie, Stella, but decided we should probably have named Hillary after Sir Edmund Hillary, she is the most amazing climber I've ever seen in a dog!

A good friend of mine have 3 JRT, Spin, Dizzy and Skid Boots.
Because first you spin then you get dizzy and don't forget to put the skid boots on the horse!

Had an ACD from Oklahoma named Sooner, that was pretty good. A chesapeake named Maple.
A cool name I heard was Velvet Ear, named by a child for a setter pup, and pronounced "Vel-vah-tear".

i've always trended towards " people " names , like i would have names for people friends , hence " hector " and " henry " .
this is a little strange , because i will readily give a people friend a nickname , but i won't usually use a nickname unless i've given it or i know the person really well .
and if i meet another dog named " kaya " or a derivative thereof . . . it's like the " coolest " dog name in whistler .

Mercy - Compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one's power to punish or harm
Mercy was a very damaged dog (both mentally and physically) when I got her, but despite everything that happened to her in her first year of life she was dedicated to loving everyone she met as hard as she could.
Radar - Named after the character on M*A*S*H who knew when people needed him and knew when the choppers were coming in before anyone else did.
I picked Radar's name because I wanted a dog that could basically read my mind and give me exactly what I wanted without even trying. Oddly enough, his name fit him because that's his personality AND his gigantic ears!
River - You can try to bend it to your desires and make it do what you want, but in the end it's got a mind of it's own and will do what it wants, how it wants, when it wants.
She's a very independent dog and fits the description perfectly. Not exactly stubborn, but it's like fighting a force of nature. You're better off just working with it instead of against it.
I try to put a lot of thought into names for dogs because in my experience they tend to grow into their names. I want a good, strong name for the pup since it will help him get through the negative times in his life.

My first dog was named after a cocker spaniel that did hunting trials in a non fiction book I read as a child. This one, his name came to me after meeting him though I had never thought of it as a name for a dog before.
I am wondering if Betty Waldron named the last I puppy yet though!

I've always wanted a Smooth Fox Terrier named "Turbo"
I named Logan after "Wolverine"...just maybe I had a thing for Hugh Jackman.
I named my chow-setter Sport because I thought it was cute. She turned out to be an awesome agility dog.
I had a Dutchie who was already named Ali so I kept it, I liked it.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog. |
