Hello raw experts!! I am a new owner! Hope you can help me out!
Dog description:
German shepherd 14 week old puppy
Midnight: Pup ate 2 raw chicken drumsticks with 1 teaspoon of Probios. Extras were a few slices of carrot. I didn't know this at the time, but my boyfriend says he ate a 1/4 cup of kibble hidden in his toys I skinned the drumsticks as much as i could but there was still a little left on it.
11am: Pup threw up in the crate and ate it all back before we could see what it was. What was left was yellowish liquid.
Activity level: seems normalish, playing with toys vigorously, bothering me for attention etc. puppy mischief.
History: This is his second time eating raw. The first time about a week ago, I fed him chicken neck without probios and he had diarrhea the next day. I fed him kibble as normal after that until I got the probios in the mail today. The chicken necks seemed too small because he would swallow them whole after crunching so I tried something bigger like drumstick which he gnawed on for a good 10 minutes.
So.. I know basically I should watch for activity level and whether he resumes eating normally, as those are signs for Parvo or Salmonella. I know If his diarrhea is bloody OR he is lethargic and not eating, i should take him to the emergency vet immediately. Is there anything else i should watch out for?

Hi!
How much was in that chicken neck meal? (Diarrhea is very often a result of overfeeding at one sitting.)
Feeding raw and kibble together isn't a choice I'd make. Also, drumsticks aren't what I'd choose for beginner RMBs.
I'd probably start reading up on the raw diet and then, when ready, make the switch (not including kibble with the raw).
Particularly with a growing puppy, I'd want a solid info basis.
Or I'd consider a frozen commercial raw, or maybe THK with add-ins, and I'd prefer that the add-ins be a good puppy RMB like chicken backs.
THK is a good bridge to full-on raw, especially with a puppy, whose needs are so specific and so important while he builds bone and teeth, etc.
You'll see here, if you want to think about THK as a "bridge," which ones are puppy-appropriate:

Embark is very popular for puppies.

Others will reply, too.
Lots of raw-experienced folks here.

I find chicken legs are a bit much.
Try backs. Skinned thighs worked for my ACDx.
Your pup is teething now----they can't tear up meat and bone too well until they have the sharp cutting molars.
Most big pups don't have a full complement of teeth until 16 wks or beyond.

Chicken backs are super. I too skin them for a beginner dog (only leaving the fatty skin on after I see the poops).
They have nice cartilage-y bones, non weight-bearing.
They're cheap, too.

Hello raw experts, thanks for the responses! I already read the Natural nutrition book and all the articles on this site as well as a couple of the major threads that connie always brings up in noob posts.
The kibble was unintentional, i didn't know he had snuck them into his mouth. I tried the drumstick because his breeder had mentioned that he would eat that fine.
All his poops today (the 24 hours since the raw drumsticks) have been firm logs so the probios is good I guess! There was a small amount (about a tablespoons' worth) of pudding-poop. I will go buy THK tomorrow per Connie's suggestion
To answer connie's question about the chicken neck: I fed him 6 necks ... is that too much for one meal?
I heard that dogs can throw up when their stomach is empty for too long, is this true?

I've only been feeding raw for about 3 months now but what I have found is that my puppy (nearly 15 weeks) wont over eat, apparently from what I've read this is quite normal, once she's full she stops, so I pick up anything that is left over. If I were feeding her necks only I usually give her 4 - 6 depending on how big they are. Kelpies are a bit smaller than GSD's though. Chicken carcasses/frames (not sure what you guys call them lol) are also great as they're mostly cartlidge. Wings are fantastic too. It's also not a problem if they swallow the necks whole as their gut is designed to deal with that but they don't get the whole teeth cleaning/gum massage part or body workout. If I give the girls necks for breakfast, then they get something like Ox tail or flaps for tea, something that they really have to chew on/work at to eat. Hope this helps a bit, I'm not an expert yet but I do have a very healthy pup similar in age to yours. Good luck

Laine,
"I fed him 6 necks ... is that too much for one meal?"
I heard that dogs can throw up when their stomach is empty for too long, is this true?
Yes and yes. (Bile vomiting is frothy yellowish and has no food in it.)
Also, I still think that drumsticks (the second incident) probably wasn't the best choice for a beginner-raw puppy. Can they be frozen while you begin the puppy on THK with chicken backs (peeled to start) or other non-weight-bearing RMBs) added in?
