Just starting a thread for ideas for the next contest - what you like, what you think might be good for next time, etc. Please add your own in!!
Idea for next time -
First place winners from the directly preceding contest are welcome to compete but ineligible for a first place prize (or any prize maybe?)So if someone wins twice in a row the prize goes to the next in line the second time.
What I liked this time -
Calling the behavior ahead of time. Makes my ADD self pick a goal and stick with it
The time allotted seemed like a good amount to me.

LOL Mara about training ADD, I do that a lot in training sessions, sometimes I have to take him how he is, what his mood is and work on something other than my intended goal, but often times its me, I can't decide. This contest helped me with that because I stuck with my goal then thought of more ways to help him learn what I wanted as we went.
I think the training could be divided into 2 categories. New tasks or something psychological (aggression, fear etc). I picked something psychological, taming Logan's kennel anxiety, whereas I think everyone else picked a new command. We didn't fit in LOL.
Also, some people taught one simple concise thing (ex: backing up the stairs) and others would teach multiple commands or variance of one (ex: jump + weaves). But idk, the variety made it very interesting...I like watching how each of us worked with our dogs to help them learn. That was fun, I want to do it again!
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog. |

JMO, but I thought your goal fitted in fine. One situation, one desensitizing thing .... I thought it was a good goal.

That's true .... the goals were extremely varied. OTOH, one of each of those types won! The jump/weaves and the backing-upstairs both won!
Maybe if we keep the voting the same (each entrant having a vote), it will work out, because the entrants seemed to be good at weighing very varied goals and the work/training involved. I could not have judged so well, I know.
It's cool that we see now how a short early clip (or even a "before" clip) added a lot to what the judges had to go on, too.
I learned a lot about training, about revising methods, even about how a contest works ....

I have to think of something Logan doesn't know already for the next one or maybe we'll continue, I haven't reached my goal of him politely sitting and waiting automatically without a brief freakout period first and if I don't say stay, he won't.

If you teach a single behavior you can also spice it up a bit by showing it in multiple locations. Kind of like I did with multiple ways of Kenzi walking on my feet. Even just having video of the same behavior in a couple different locations shows that the dog is solid in the new behavior

That is indeed a great suggestion.
A simple behavior that has been proofed assiduously trumps a more complex one that the dog doesn't understand unless it's in a certain room and maybe commanded in a certain pattern.

Some dogs can be much more situational about commands then others. Move to a different room or just turning you back and give the same command and some of them act like they never heard the word before.
Others just "get it" from the start.

I've had many more of the first kind than the second kind. I'm lucky I didn't start with the second kind and then get one of the first kind.

I didn't do it because I just got too darn busy on the farm, plus I couldn't figure out how to post a video.
But, I think winning shouldn't disqualify a dog from winning again. And I'd like to enter in the next round, so I hope there will be one.
