Carlin is going to the vet for the first time since I've had him, so I just want to cover my bases. I don't think he'll have a problem, since I requested the female vet and vet techs. But, just to be safe, I'm gonna have him muzzled.
These are the Hound of Baskerville Ultra muzzles. The company recommends size 3 for Australian Cattle Dogs, but Carlin has a big head so I measured him and went for the size 4. However, I felt it was a bit too big, so I picked up a 3 to compare. The 4 seems too big, and the 3 seems too small.
I like the jafco ones personally, there's not way the dog can pinch a person through it or anything. But you have to be careful because they can still ram you with their head.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
They have BIG spaces in them. I don't think they're safe IMO. I like the strap arrangement and quality but wish the spacing was smaller. I picked up a plastic basket muzzle for Tanner from a local pet supply wholesaler after looking at the Baskervilles.
That's pretty much how i see it, the huge spaces give the dog a place to still bite, or part of your hand could get in there. Those cloth muzzles vets use only work if the dog can't take it off and it happens to fit perfectly...but they can still manage to pinch you with it on, due to the hole at the end and the dog can't pant. It all depends on the dog though, some just give up with a muzzle on but others are still in full freakout mode.
Again, I love the jafco muzzles...you can even reward the dog with it on, but he can't bite anyone and can still pant. I have a clear one so I can easily read my dog's face.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.

PS
John, I agree with you about getting your own if you can. The dog can become acclimated at home and eliminate one stressful new thing at the vet's, and also the dog can pant freely.
