I just recently aquired a new edition to my family through a rescue and have been nursing her since she was one day old. She is now 21 days old. My wife and I have been using Esbilac powder and have been feeding her through a bottle. She has gained good weight, now walking and opened her eyes 4 day ago. So needless to say she is healthy. My question is around what age should I start weening her from the formula? Are there any alteritives to this brand of formula due to the fact that Molly is now consuming quite a bit and the formula is expensive? I read that you can use evaporated cows milk with a dollop of Karo syrup for energy and palatability and for protein suplimentation, an egg yolk. Does this sound healthy or could it cause more harm than good? What would you guys suggest?
I have made my own formula. Lets see if I can remember the ingredients. 1 can evaporated milk; 1/4 cup goats milk (not COWS milk!) (raw is the best choice if you can find someone who sells it!); 1 TBS Karo syryp; 1 egg yolk; and I added a liquid vit B. (VERY important!)
I had a very interesting experience with one litter that was bottle fed. I started weaning my pups at 3 1/2 wks. If pups are on the mother this is too early but if they are bottle fed and are weaned onto a raw diet, this works very well. They need the natural occuring enzymes from the raw to digest the food this early.
I can emphasize enough how good raw goats milk is for pups /dogs!!!! If you can get this I highly recommend it.
What I have used in the past is about 2 cups of goats milk, 1 inch of Nutrical, and 2 tablespoons of Gerbers rice cereal.
When the pups are old enough to start walking around you can mix more cereal, some baby meat, the formula and later some of what ever dog food you are going to feed. Make a fairly thick paste and put it in a flat bowl. You want it about 1/8-1/4 inch deep. Put the puppy in the bowl so that they get it on their feep and a little on the bodies. Most puppies in a group will lick the food off each other and off their feet. The same thing will work with a single puppy licking it off their feet. As the puppy gets older and starts to eat and lick up food out of the pan, you can add more of the dog food until the dog food is the primary ingredient. Eventually you can feed the dog food dry if you want. Supplement feedings until the puppy is eating enough out of the bowl to maintain body weight.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
