Hello everyone. I'm a hobby breeder and have had 2 successful breedings with my dogs (1 sire & 1 dam).
My dam is just finishing her heat cycle now, but I did not see a successful tie this time around. My sire has been trying to mate since last Saturday (10/6), and even though the dam would stand for him, she would pull away before he could connect.
I tried to hold her, but she would just sit down before contact. I then tried to put a small hay bale under her to prevent the sitting, but that interfered with the sire.
This morning it looks like they're back to being just friends.
Sometimes it seems if dogs live together, rules are established between the two of them that prevent
Completion of breeding.
Next time, when your female comes into season, have the male stay away for a week or so....or board your female for the first 10 days of her cycle.
Also, a checkup for both the male and female could help, to rule out orthopedic issues in both.
Just some ideas.
I definitely know this is true with gorillas, Betty -- If a male & female live together in captivity, then they will treat each other as if they were siblings, and consequently observe the gorilla social taboo against incest ... In their case, an outside male must visit for breeding purposes, because he will not be viewed as a family member /// Canine pack culture is not the same, of course, and sometimes a bitch who lives as a bonded pair with a dog will not stand for any other stud, even in mid-heat (but this may differ on a case-by-case basis).
Thank you both, I'll try that next time and keep it in mind if I ever consider breeding gorillas! With 4 monkeys of my own already at home (kids), we probably won't go that route.
