My 3 year old GSD bitch, who whelped in november, has had changes in her coat. The flanks and withers have become course and dry. She nibbles at it occasionaly, but not constantly. At first I thought it was do to changes in her invironment, as she was born in a colder zone, but is now in the sub-tropics. 85 degrees year round. But now I suspect dietary needs. She is fed Solid Gold Millenia and some Hunchen-Flocken she gets from the puppies bowls. Some Sea-Meal. Some raw foods, mostly vegetables. Some raw eggs.
Perhaps I need to add Salmon Oil? What else would improve the length and texture of her coat?

Salmon oil or even generic fish oil as well as Vitamin E capsules. I give one capsule of each to both of my dogs daily.
Is it possible that she is coming back into heat soon? I know that would mean she comes in every 4 months, but my bitch's coat turns just like you describe right before she comes in season. Almost straw like, and normally she has a very luxurious coat (when I am angry with her I remind her she would make a nice coat LOL)
Hi Deanna, I haven't seen any indications of heat as of yet. Her last heat was Early Sept. She whelped Nov.12. She had been having a regular cycle of over 6 months prior to that. But I will keep an I on that. Thank you for that information.
I will add the Salmon oil and vit.E to her diet and see if it helps. In your opinion, is 400IU of vit.E correct for 72lbs.? Or can it be a little higher?

duh,... my math isn't doing too well today. If she whelped in November and was in heat in early September, she IS due to come in heat soon. (I had a blonde moment)
I have always given the 400 iu's I know there are others who give more than that, but I would check the content of the solid gold before I would recommend adding any more. It is a fat soulable vitamin, so the excess is not simply flushed out. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing.
The Solid Gold bags and website do not list % of vit.E so I will stick to the 400's. Do you know of any other ways to improve the straw-like condition? Maybe something topical?

This is not a food suplement per se. But it is very good for dry skin, and make the fur very soft and shiny, like a pup. MIRRA-COAT, is a french product.
