In Germany, are the schutzhund dogs tested by the helper hiding behind bushes and jumping out and grabbing handler around the neck or arms as they are walking by with the dog at night in a non lighted area? I was told that this is how dogs are tested in Germany.

Yeah. . .its called the Strangler Assault Stress Test.
SAST is a standard test used in Germany before dogs are allowed to join a Schutzhund club. They also have to pass the IWPDMLITHLAMT and the IIDWTGIMCIRRFTHUTTT.
(i won't pee down my leg if the helper looks at me test - if i don't want to go into my crate i run really fast to hide under the truck test)
These are just a few of the tests that seperate the Germans from the rest of the world as, without question, the best dog trainers on the planet.

Okay you guys, that was funny, but I think an honest question deserves an honest answer as well. Sorry, must be that maternal instinct thing.

OK, OK, but that was damned funny!!!!!!!!!!!
Ms. Camacho, in a variety of tests, such as the in the seiger show, in the schhI exam, and in the ZTP, there is an attack on handler. Do not visualize this as a actual attack on handler from a hiding place. It is more of an attack on dog. It is used to determine the temperment of a dog. Not necessarily the protective abilities of the dog. It is not done as a prelude to schutzhund training but as part of the test which is where a dog receives titles or breeding status. These are not terribly difficult tests and are not designed to determine if your dog will protect you (although I wish it would escalate to such a thing personally).
There is not contact with the handler, no strangle, or anything like that. You can see the attack on handler in Leerburgs tape on preparing for the SchHI exam.
I good place to see fairly strong dogs doing it is in the WPO trials that Ed taped in '99 n Augsburg. These are police dogs and for the most part these dogs will protect the handler. The test is done by a very good young helper from the Bundesgranzschutzpolizei.

Ok guys, I know this. I know what the courage test and have seen it and I am active in my schutzhund club. I had a chuckle too, but no kidding, this woman is serious. Now, my telling her how silly that is and someone like VC saying the same thing will certainly convince others not to worry about being "attacked" if they pursue schutzhund. Of course this woman will most likely stick to her guns (us Americans do schutzhund much different according to her).

In a normal Schutzhund club we don´t test the dogs like that. The police tests the dogs like that. Our dogs are mostly sportdogs. Some guys want more than a normal sport dog. Than we test the dog if they would protect them. Every dog can join a schutzhund club without a test like that. In our club we have dogs that don´t do protection work. Only doing obedience. We have all kinds of dogs in our club. In Germany a dog is only allowed to breed when he did the Körung and the Schau and at least the SCH 1. I never heard something about the SAST test. The SAST is not a trial.
