I just finished viewing Training the Motivational Retrieve. This is one time I wish I were not a moderator for this board because I hope my next comment will not be considered biased. This is the best video I have ever viewed on dog training. It will change the way you look at this exercise for ever! I cannot be any more honest.

Ok Vince, lets take the pressure off you: <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
I too have bought/viewed this tape and "this is the best video I have ever viewed on dog training. It will change the way you look at this exercise for ever! I cannot be any more honest."
(The content is great, but let's take up a collection and buy Ed a clip-on, wireless mike for his subjects...I could hear the cows mooing...)

I agree with the mic suggestion. :-) This is the third training video I have edited on a computer - no more tape. I am still learning to deal with computer files and the audio is challenging to say the least. It's kind of like dog training, I am learning through my mistakes. By the way there were no cows - that was Kevin Sheldahl recovering from a hang over. You will see that as I get the hang of this computer editing every new production will get better and better - I think the next video will only be released on DVD and not on video tape.

I'm not a modarator, thank goodness for all of us. I bought the tape, hell I'm thinking about asking Ed to put me on a list where as soon as the tape, dvd, etc is ready for sale, keep my credit card on file and just send that puppy out here! I think, with the advant of the dvd, it would be a great deal easier to study the training sessions, despite the very few and MINOR technical difficulties. I was glad to get this info when I did. I am hoping that Ed, in conjunction with Bernhard, puts together a sport tracking program. Ed's training vids rock! The no bullshit, "this is WHY it is done this way" style is kick ass! ( too much coffee this AM).There are no self greatness proclomations as there are in other productions (have seen them, won't but them.) This style with Bernhard's information is, in my opinion, so cutting edge that it is like being re-introduced to the sport. Put it on vinyl,33 rpm LPs, I will figure out a way to watch it!

O.K. now that I remember why I came to this section: In the vid building focus and drive, all particpants start out from a general heel position and begin the drive work with the ball on the string. Althought this has worked for me to a great extent, I have been considering tieing my dog out, frustrating him with prey movements similar to those is very early bite work AND then going into the work as seen in the vid. Was any of this done and editted for the sake of time on the vid or is my dog somewhat lacking in drive, genetically? Of course I can't expect a diagnosis of the net, just a little guidance. Unlike some, I can handle the truth about my dog, ultimately I want to have a program for him where as little compulsion as possible is needed and I thought I would bounce the tie out thing off of you all before doing it. Vince, Richard, VanCamp, Ed, Kevin, help me on this one. Thanks.
P.S. Kevin, that wasn't really you was it?

I too hope that there will be a sport tracking video with Bernhard. While tracking tapes are for sale, I am sure Benhard has something new to add.

“Althought this has worked for me to a great extent, I have been considering tieing my dog out, frustrating him with prey movements similar to those is very early bite work AND then going into the work as seen in the vid.”
az trooper:
I understand your logic behind this but I don’t think it will fly. The reason being the key behind his training is to put the dog in drive with the ball so that he will be rewarded with the ball later. Putting the dog into drive with a sleeve and then using the ball as a reward will not work the same. Remember the deal is "you do what I want and I let you play with my ball". You must build drive with the ball for the contract to work. The other reason is when you use a ball you put the dog into drive then immediately go into OB work. You would loose that by having to remove your dog from the tie out. Keep the ideas flowing. Good post.
