My question is for everyone who has a ppd or working dog. do you keep the dog in the house loose when you are not there? I see a lot of people keep the dog in a kennel outside or in a crate in the home when owner is not there. but how is the dog supposed to protect the home if he is locked up. Also if any one does keep the dog loose in the home how do you keep them from ripping up things. I am tired of coming home to a ripped up stuffed animal.
Thanks in advance

On the flip side.... My PSD is kept in a crate when no one is home. He is too destructive….. anything he can get his mouth on would be fair . Stuffed animals, furniture, small children…...he discovered an open closet 4 months ago and pulled 5 shirts off of the hangers before his antics were discovered. He likes to explore quite a bit too…. Countertops, washer machines, file cabinets, cars….you name it he climbs it. If we are there to supervise he’s allowed to be free for periods of time. He and our other male dog share “non crated time” as they don’t get along when together.
Every dog is different, you need to assess your dog’s personality, habits, and maturity in making this decision.

Notice the difference in behaviors noted by Brandi, whose Patrol dog is a GSD, and Matthew, whose patrol dog is a Mal ( Buttercup's demon relative )

Both my males run loose in the house when I am not at home. They dare people to come LOL Bodie perches himself on the table to bark at people, a habit I have never been able to break..a small price to pay for feeling safe. The other two..no way, they would destroy my house LOL.

I would be overjoyed to sacrifice a stuffed animal to the gods of destruction, I had a dog that would eat, rearange, destroy, and mangle all things edible or inedible and in an amazingly short period of time. Count your blessings, I only had a metal folding chair to sit on for quite a while after one of her rampages.
I am smarter than my dog, your just not. |

Until I reciently finished his run outside, my working GSD slept in the kitchen. After he chewed the corner off one of the cabinets, everything got a good soaking with bitter apple, and he got Ed's treatment with it. I didn't have any trouble after that. Still can't leave anything laying around though.

My GSD pup stays in the crate when I'm not home or can't keep an eye on him. While teething he made gravel out of the corner of the stone hearth on my fireplace and ate the leg off my dining room table. I don't know if he'll outgrow this or not but it will be quite a while before I'm willing to find out.

As far as some tricks on how to stop a dog from being destructive while you're not home, there are two 100% fail safe methods:
A) Crate the dog while you're gone
B) Take the dog with you
I learned these lessons from bitter experience well over 20 years ago - coming home to see my dogs carry the remains of my couch cushions around and noticing that that the amount of chewed foam spread though out my house gave it a cheery, Christmas-like atmosphere ( unfortunately, it was July....in Florida )
I had only myself to blame. Last time I ever made *that* mistake ( but I've made a bunch of new ones since then! )

I have come to accept the fact that my Malinois will probably never have run of the house whether I'm home or not!
Her last "expensive" episode included figuring out how to open up the TV cabinet, grabbing a couple of pens, chewing them and spreading ink all over the carpet and herself. And I thought that I had dog proofed the room and could trust her for a few minutes  All this took place in the span of about 4 minutes while I was in the powder room. She now accompanies me to whatever room I'm in, is crated or kicked outside in her run when I'm not able to keep an eye on her.
