I had my now 19 month old gsd evaluated by professional trainers that have worked many years with gsds although their current dogs i believe are all malls they are a working kennel. Ok so from the test i was told it does not look like my dog has ANY defense drive BUt he is EXTREMLY high in prey drive and has solid nerves and is confident (from what they have said) they also said they think he would be a great dog for shutzhund or herding BUT they are not sure about personal protection since he doesnt have any defense drive. My question is it a common thing to have a dog in this? is it possible as he gets older he may get some sort of defense drive? his prey drive i was told is VERY HIGH so i guess thats a good thing but personal protection was what my goal was kinda but i dont know if it would be worth it?
I've learned to take "evaluations" very carefully. My fully trained and kickin-butt PPD dog went through a little phase where he would bite hard and then release and stand by the decoy. He wasn't in avoidance; he was simply stopping the attack. I took my dog to a supposed top trainer who basically told me my dog didn't have it in him to do the work. It didn't seem to matter to the trainer when I told him my dog was doing great for a couple of years until this happened. Well, the trainer was 100% WRONG. As I thought it was really just a little tweaking that he needed. Once that was done (not with that trainer's help) he was back to his old ways of biting hard and holding good.
And then there are some trainers seem to look down on dogs that didn't come from their own working lines or lines of their friends/associates.
I'm not saying the trainer you met with is mistaken. I'm just saying that you might not necessarily accept just that one evaluation as gospel. Good luck!
i was also told that my dog was not sensative at all which im hoping is a good thing. Are their several ways to create defense drive if the dog has lots of prey? my dog is nutered now also so that may be a problem
