It appears that the AKC is moving forward with a working type title. Maybe it is a move to undermine the numerous individual breed clubs that are trying to position themselves for FCI recognition (AWDF and the clubs that it is affiliated with?)? Or (and I doubt this) they have seen the poplarity of protection sports and have stepped back from their public stance against protection work? If they do accept a working title for the protection breeds then this will seriously put the brakes on USA's efforts internationally.
If it is true about including protection based acceptance along with all working applications then it is a major step forward.
Undermine the breed clubs though is a stretch Kevin.
Seriously, all the best intentions and tireless dedication the individual working breed clubs may have put forth trying to gain FCI Recognition will be diluted pale white in comparison the what the AKC can do in terms of political influence.

JMO Jerry,
This is the very problem. political influence that will bury the efforts of organizations like the AWDF and USA. Decisions from an organization that has even prevented the inclusion of protection dog sports at associated events. The step forward may be a step into such political fighting and watered down decisions that the protection sports will be mired down forever. You are right about the strength that AKC holds. It will not likely throw itself headlong into the protection sports for this very reason.
Well you can look at it like this. If the AWDF gets reconized first schH will stay a strange fringe sport, but if the AKC reconizes it will become mainstream.
It's certainly an interesting idea. Good or bad, the AKC would have the clout to make bite work more "socially acceptable". I'm really ambivalent about how I feel about that.
the thing I'm waiting to see, if this takes off, is how the GSD will change in the USA over the next 10yrs or so.

Kevin,
I'm confused. I thought that the AKC already has what IT considers to be working titles with the utility titles. They have tracking and article retrieve as part of the requirements for high acheivement in those events. So will that remain and then they are going to add titles that include bite work as well?
How and why would that effect Schutzhund USA? I thought that they operate totally seperate and that USA follows German standard, so... AKC would be very different , wouldn't it?
Thanks, I appreciate your insight!( and everyone else's too, of course )
No one ever said life was supposed to be easy, life is what you make of it!!
When AKC recognized titles for earth dogs, the AWTA which is the oldest working terrier organization,(1971 I think) has been pushed into the background. When the AKC recognized the JRT(95 or 96) The JRTCA has lost some of its clout. Lots of power there with the AKC. I'd rather not see it go so mainstream with Schutzhund. There will always be a hardcore group that will keep certain breeds(Working dogs) for what they can do, but when the general public jumps on the band wagon, it can only hurt, IMO.
When I was active in AKC throughout th 80's, the Golden was the domanant breed in obdeience. The Border Collie was then only accepted in the misc. class. Once the Border Collie was accepted by AKC, they became the domanant breed in flyball, agility, and very strong in obedience. They have also become very popular in breed rescue simply because many people can't handle them. What do you think will happen when the general dog public starts training in a "bite" sport because it's the latest thing to do with there GSD, Dobe, Rott, etc.
