I'd be curious to hear from board members who are or have been K9 officers what their take on this is. I can't imagine forgetting and leaving my dog in my car like that, but I'm not a LEO, and so feel unqualified to judge.

There are a few facts missing about what happened as far as why the heat built up in the car.
I'm lucky enough to have a heat monitor/alarm in my car and it has saved my dog twice this summer when the engine in my car stalled while I was at court.
One problem that is very widespread in K9 is the use of hand me down cars that were taken out of service in patrol and are then assigned to K9. Unfortunatly these cars are often less then reliable and often have problems with the air conditioning systems.
Perhaps someday someone will start a "heat monitor" foundation. There are a billion vest a dog type charities but no heat monitor ones.
I agree with Off. Grub that there are not enough facts in the article to give an opinion as to what happened. As typical in these type of situations someone has to spout off and say the officer shoud be charged criminally. As a Police officer I don't recall being asked to give up my constitutional rights ie innocent until proven guilty.
I believe the animal rights activists should not make a judgement until the case had been thouroughly investigated.
I have been a K9 officer for several years and I am much more vigilant in the summer time to make periodic checks on the car. I am also fortunate that our department gives K9 officers new cars every 4 years and our mechanics are meticulous about checking the cooling system in our vehicles when they go in for service.
In closing, my thoughts are with the Dallas officer. For a dedicated K9 officer that is a very tragic loss.
My thoughts also are with the Officer. Police Officers are subjected to an enormous amount of stress, and often work long hours (60 hrs a week not uncommon), and irregular shifts. Though a tragic incident, the officer is human and should be commended for stepping up to the plate and handling a police dog in the first place. K9 Officers are expected to be great officers, great handlers, great trainers, and perfect citizens. There is no adequate compensation for this task, and most officers do it purely out of love for the dogs and the job. I believe the Dallas newspaper acted inappropriately by quoting the Humane Society (who's national leader has admitted that he would end all hunting and fishing if he could)concerning the officer being prosecuted. We should be accustomed to the retoric from the liberal media by now, but it still gets under my skin.

Well, At least the Humane Society is consistant. One of our handlers lost his dog in the same manner about 23 years ago. They were calling for his head on a platter then, too.
