My 2 year old Bouvier was just diagnosed with bone cancer 2 weeks ago and is already fading fast. There was a growth on his ribs that grew from the size of a 1/2 orange to the size of 1/2 grapefruit from the time we went to the vet to the time of the surgery. He's always had a little lump on his ribs since we got him so it wasn't until it started growing that we were concerned and that has just been a few weeks. Has anyone had a dog with bone cancer? Is this typical? I'm just in shock over the speed of the growth and his age. It just seemed to come out of the blue.
The osteosarcoma family of cancers ( bone type cancers ) can be a *very* rapidly advancing form of cancer, sadly. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
You have my sincere condolences, I wish you and your dog peace in his remaining time.
I lost my dog back in March to bone cancer. She had it in her front shoulder. We decided to have her leg amputated to relieve her of the pain and hoped we'd get at least a few months of relative normalcy with her. It turned out not to be worth it. Her remaining life was not really a happy one with us every day looking for signs of hope or pain. I know if I had opted to put her to sleep in the first place that I would always wonder if I had given up too soon on her, but now I know if I were confronted with a pet with cancer again, I would not put them through it. It's miserable all around.
I'm sorry I have nothing hopeful to say, and I'm really sorry you are being confronted by the terrible illness of your pet. It's a damn hard thing.
