I recently moved to a fast growing town in South Carolina, just before Hilton Head Island. I met with a trainer with a fairly new facility to see her agility equipment. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that she uses remote collars, is not opposed to protection sports and loves Malinois. I was expecting a "Petsmart type" trainer for lack of a better word. She attended a seminar on how to use a remote collar in Vegas I believe. She knew Waleed Malouf (sp?) who is from where I used to live (NY). I forgot which sport he trains in. I'm sure some of you know him. I was also impressed that when I inquired about her agility ad in the paper she sent me to someone else. She asked if I competed and when I told her yes she sent me to the woman who trains for competition specifically, whereas her classes are mainly to help pet owners with obedience and control. She also said I could use her indoor facility to train on a private basis. This way I could practice any time in a dry air conditioned place. The fee was reasonable. There is also a new SAR guy who moved down from up north looking for people to train. It's so exciting to see good things happening in a new area, especially trainers who seem to have some knowledge of dog behavior and use methods other than clickers and treats.
For those that are interested in e-collar training I hope to be able to release a new DVD next week on E-collar training for pet owners. http://leerburg.com/318.htm
It has sections on: features of various brands of collars, explaining different philosophies on e-collar training, how to condition the dog to the collar, how to determine the level of stimulation to use, training the recall, training the do to walk without pulling, training the Leave-it, stop the dog from jumping up, dealing with aggression towards other dogs, and problem solving. It will be between 2 and three hours long - I still have several days of editing so I am not sure exactly how long yet.
