good afternoon all from atlanta ga! im a couple days away from making a huge decision and i was wondering if any of you could give me your input. i have spent about the last month looking at all the kennels i could find online and have narrowed my selections down to 3. i have a 13 wk old male gsd that is the grandson of torro van het bleekhof. im about to make a move on getting him some female companionship. first off i make this post with a guilty concience for leerburg not being in my top 3. i just have a certian look i desire the dog to have. i owe leerburg a great deal of gratitude for giving me this forum to ask this question. my finalists are vom holtzberg (ernie and talon litter) vom ramhausen (narys policia and rena litter) and vom banach (gep zps and carla litter) do any of these jump out as a better selection than the others? my plan is to use her primarily in personal protection and possibly search and rescue. any inpot would be greatly appreciated

For input..
Posting links to the kennels that you're looking at will get you a reply faster.
Most people aren't going to do the extra work of having to paste those kennel names into Google and look them up.
If you really want answers, you need to meet people half way, not make them do all your work for you.
I usually don't reply to posts where a person won't bother to capitalize their spelling, but I know that you're new and I'm just trying to get you into the mindset that will increase the chances of you getting replies.

Ok, now we're cooking!
I looked at the breedings but before I give my opinion I'd like to ask - which of your uses for the dog will be more important to you, ppd or SAR work? My reply will kinda depend on that...
And by the way....more than a few of the SAR folks have mentioned that having bite training on your dog is looked upon dimly by the SAR folks, so it might end up one or the other for your dog - only you can determine which is more important to you.

What if you kinda, you know *cough* forget to mention the bite training?

Mike! Under no circumstances would I forget to mention bite training on a SAR team. I've trained my dog for both. Although he's very clear headed and has solid nerves, he's also starting to show a strong willingness to be civil. That's a lot of training to decide I now don't want to chance it. He's just now 21 months old. Because I love training my dog, I don't feel that I've wasted time with his SAR training, but I wont use him for anything other than cadaver. He's fantastic with kids, loves anyone that treats him with respect, but I wont take the chance on sending him after a lost person. I constantly proof agains a bad bite, and I think he's a fantastic, solid dog, but there are to many uncontrolable factors out there on a search. It's just not worth it.

I know this has been discussed to death, but I disagree.
While I *might* be hesitant to send a bite-trained dog on an off-lead area search in SAR applications (for obvious reasons and depending on the dog), I would not hesitate at ALL to use the same dog to track/trail a lost person. Because the dog is on lead, the handler has much more control and the chance of an accidental bite should be almost completely eliminated.
Just my opinion.

Scott, I can agree with an on line search. It's just not something the team I was on did. 90% of our work was cadaver, and the live searches we did were, almost always, wilderness type searches. I have all the confidence in the world with my dog, but $#!+ happens to the best of them.

Thanks to all for shedding some light on something i didnt know about. To answer Wills question, i think that i would get alot more use out of her for personal protection. The breeder i got Rommel from does search and rescue alot so i could concentrate his training there. Hopefully by answering Will's question as to whats more important, i hope that gives everyone the info to advise me which litter would have an advantage over the others.(By the way Will, Rommel's grandsire is Grim Z P S so you can tell Fetz he has a distant relative north of Atlanta!)Again, thanks in advance for everyones input.

Travis,
With the ppd side being the most important to you, I'd opt for the litter out of Narys & Rena, from a genetics standpoint.
Cool that you're in Atlanta, come on down and train with us sometime, it's not too bad of a drive!
You can help us pick Chris up off the ground during the training sessions...
