Woo Hoo!!! I'm so happy for you David. I must have gotten a little dog hair in my eyes when I was reading your account of meeting your girl again cause the screen went all blurry.
I can hardly wait to hear about your new life together with your special girl. I love a story with a happy ending.
Found a great house! It's plenty big on the inside and has a large, fenced in back yard. It's in a quiet neighborhood with dog-walk friendly streets.
Fama is doing awesome. She's off all her meds and moving as well as ever. She and Pam are getting along famously. It really has went about as well as I could possibly imagine. I'm working her daily on birch and she's doing very well in detection. It helps tire her out too. Her OB is coming back really quickly, and she is also learning Pam's house cues very well. There is a lot of 2 way respect between them thanks to Pam being confident in her handling from the get go.
Pam trimmed Fama's toenails yesterday with me doing a little distraction with food and it went very well. It was a bit of a test as Fama hates having her nails done, and she allowed it with no defense or aggression at all.
As to doing the nails.
My brother got his Presa when it was 3 yrs old and he was told they had to hog tie the dog to do it's nails. The vet wouldn't trim them or the groomer.
I showed my brother how to do marker training and after the marker was loaded he started touching the dogs feet, mark and reward.
Rubbing the dogs feet, mark and reward. Touch the dogs feet with the Dremel turned on. Rub the dog's feet with the Dremel on.
Touch the dogs feet with the Dremel itself. yadda yadda on through the actual grinding.
Within about two weeks the dog now calmly lays on his side while his nails are done.
Make it a rewardable behavior!
