Ho. Lee. Crap. Wonder how many dogs that killed.
Whoa! Apparently it's not that safe for use either!
From the article:
Xylitol is not "GRAS" (Generally Recognized As Safe for consumption). Xylitol only has a "GRAS" for cosmetic products which is why it is accepted in toothpaste and chewing gum. The assumption for "safe" use of xylitol in cosmetic products is that it is not swallowed or absorbed in any way. However as you know, it will be absorbed when it goes into your mouth. Xylitol, the white powdered stuff, does not occur naturally. The "xylitol" in nature is going to be different because it doesn't exist on its own as a singular entity
I'm really confused now. It's in candy, cookies, muffin mixes, lollipops, and on and on .... not just absorbed in the mouth (as in gum or toothpaste), but ingested outright.
I'm not confused about the dog thing .... it's very toxic to dogs.
But the people thing .... I'm not following why it's thought of as safe only if not absorbed but is also in edibles. Lots of edibles.
when my Cody was very sick, they thought he could have xylitol poisoning. Its scary when you think our dogs go nosing around in the grass as we take them for a walk. I am always looking out for gum on the streets. So many people love to spit their gum out it seems.
The things dogs have to go through when poisoned are horrible! It is terrible to watch your dog hemmorage.
