Here's my big issue about long hours in crates - if you're going to gone for 10 hrs every day then you shouldn't get a high energy youngster unless you plan on spending the remaining waking hours activity doing stuff with your dog - rain or shine, regardless of how tired you are when you get home. You need a lower energy adult dog because it's just not fair to the dog to get a smart energetic dog and keep it in a crate all day/every day.
I commend you for doing your best to make this situation work with your dog, Natalie. But for every person like you, there are 10 that would blame the dog and drop it at a shelter by the time it's a year old. Because they didn't have or make the time to meet their dog's needs and they ended up with a neurotic mess. It's so sad
lol, that's exactly what i'm doing that's why i didn't feel so bad. even since i got him, every single day, rain or heat, after work, at 10 pm we went out. and we stay out into the night, sometimes 2am.
and on weekends we go out day time as well.
i didn't know almost anything but i DID know they need exercise and i was prepared to either force my daughter (if she backed out) or do it myself.
i will NEVER give up my dog. if he ever bit me i'd make endless excuses and blame myself. i'm hoping this never happens, IMO he's not out of control, just needs some boundaries and training. but IF...
in any case, the crating was a dumb decision. i had no need to crate him the entire time, as i said, my daughter was home in the next room and i tried using that to see how he behaves, like i had her tell me how long he cried.
i just thought that since crating is what everyone does then i might as well start making believe that i don't have my daughter to help.
to be completely honest the times she had to leave and had to lock him up she didn't do as good of a job as i did (like the toys i'd leave him, the kongs, treat balls).
so i thought this was a good solution, i just start acting like she's not there and lock him up "the right way" because that's what many people are already doing.
again, i didn't realize that being crated for 11 hours is not good for him, i did read ASPCA's thingie that said the dogs sleep the entire time we're gong (except the first 45 mins)

I am lost in these 14 pages as to what you would like to work on.... Pulling, reactivity, cat chasing, separation anxiety, all of the above?
all of the above but not online. i'm getting a trainer.
but what's the problem? no one has that many problems at once? i actually have more problems i haven't posted about.
It was, I believe, an attempt to gain focus in a long thread loaded with defensive posts that often take it off-topic. Since you're not interested, it's moot.
