Makes sense of course
Just curious, but does the heartworm medication you use also protect your dogs against other types of worms?
Are there still some worms that they can pick up (regardless of medication) from eating raw meats? I take all the freezing precautions with wild game meats but I think you posted a while back that some types of worms actually survive the freezing...
Oh well; I suppose that if my dogs did pick up some parasite from raw, that their stool checks would reveal that right?
So confusing... all my vets had to say about raw was the usual salmonella, e-coli blabla nonsense, but they don't have a clue as to worms and other parasites

Yes, but I don't think it's likely to be raw meat feeding; I think it's likely to be other dogs' poops, etc. When one dog is infected with worms, eggs are passed with the feces and scattered everywhere. They can get on a dog’s coat and be licked off and swallowed. They can be in water. They can be in road kill. They hatch out and are fully developed in a matter of days.
One of my dogs, who had sarcoptic mange when I adopted him, is on selamectin (which treats/prevents that, heartworm, ear mites, fleas, and a common tick). The others are on Heartguard. I don't think either one works on roundworms or tapeworms, but maybe someone else knows better and will post.
But yes, I do think that random poop tests are a good answer. JMO.

Iverhart Max chewables protect against roundworm, heartworm, hookworm, AND tapeworm. The tapeworm protection is really nice since this is what most dogs have a problem with.
It is also cheaper than Heartgard...which is REALLY nice.

yikes.
so, what should i do? what better place to ask that question than here?
ben is almost five years old and as healthy as a horse. my vet has never said "boo" about heartworm, nor has any other vet in the area (i've seen or been a client of quite a few). none of the dog owners in the training or agility groups i've belonged to have ever mentioned it.
what do i need to know to make a good decision for my dog?
you do know, of course, that in the winter we get arctic level freezing (-30 to -50) ?

This is ONLY MHO, after a few years of monitoring the heartworm info on CDC and other sites.
I have watched as every single western and northern state lagged approximately ten years between the initial cases and the widespread use of prevention.
There's just a big lag in connecting isolated cases.
I would print out some authoritative info and show it to my vet.
My personal take is that I would give the prevention every month that has mosquitos. In my area, there's maybe two safe months because we have sudden very warm spells even in February.
Again, this is JMO. I would like to read others' opinions.
I don't ever want to face heartworm treatment for my dogs, and I don't see much downside to the prevention.
