Yeah, I meant to ask about that too!!!
I have no trouble imagining us people on the forum "casually" discussing deer heads for the fun of it, but it usually isn't the case for """normal""" folks! Lol.
Yah, that is exactly his point. He thinks I am feeding a deer head "just for the fun of it". Which is true he just doesn't understand that!
I actually am lucky enough to have a full sponsership with a raw dog food company. I have free food in large variety. He does not understand why I am interested in ANY game meat, let alone heads
I like to include wild game because I feel it is species appropriate, organic/hormone free, contains trace elements/minerals not found in commercial meat and so on... Also I like the idea of not wasting anything that hunters may kill. If it is gonna be dead, it might as well get eaten and not rott somewhere!
Also a good portion of my sponsership food is ground so I like to have some extra bone in meals for obvious reasons.
He conceides to all parts of the game but thinks I just want to feed the head out of some morbid facination...which is actually kinda true It is not out of neccesity.
I bet by next fall I will wear him down If the bears where not still hanging around I would stash it in the bush.
I try to pick my battles

Jennifer,
My hubby is kind of the same way. He does not see the whole point to the diet I feed. He LOVES the benefits and admits that the dogs do great, it is just hard for him to "embrace" like I did.
So, he knows I feed raw, and he knows I feed some "weird" stuff. Basically, he does not ask, and I do not tell.
Once in a while we talk about it and he just shakes his head and mutters "dog eat better than I do" and laughs.
So, I am fortunate that he lets me do it, fortunate that he will open the baggie and put it in the bowls, but I know he will never be a raw feeder like we are......

You can offer to cook it and serve it for dinner so it doesn't go to waste....or.... feed it to the dog.
You make some very good points about trace elements, organic, and not wanting it to rot.
Why not just keep it in the trunk (assuming it will stay cold enough) and feed it in the crate while traveling or at work.
And WHAT is wrong with a little morbid fascination???
Isn't that why people watch car races, bull riding and Schutzhund?

This morning my husband had to get up early and use the truck (the one with the deer head and parts still in it that I slipped into casual conversation last night).
He informed me he would be dumping the stuff in the dumpster on the way to town.
I almost said "Okay...throw out the deer head..but fish out the deer penis would you..it will make a good chew for the dog"
But alas I bit my toungue, he my have never recoverd from that comment.
I did keep the organs and will still be getting meat and bones after the deer has hung for a bit so not a total loss...

Now Sarah, Jennifer may very well want to keep her husband. I'd say it's a little premature for the Godfather tactic (although I would PAY to see the reaction to THAT!! LOL)
Why would she want to keep someone who won't let her feed heads?
Hmmm, is this why I'm not married? All those rules 'n stuff.

Do I detect some of you having FUN with this thread? Knock it off, will ya?
We have 3 deer hanging up in our large barn, ready to be cut up. Raine and I went down to get hay for our horses and I can only say I wish I had a camera at her reaction! She was like "What the Hell!???"
I haven't ever fed the heads but I am going to keep these and try it! I don't think Ed will mind

I'm a wimp with the deer head thing. I'm a walking contradiction since I eat meat and feed it to my dog, but I keep seeing Bambi's mom or dad. I don't think I could bear to see my dog go for the eyes, those beautiful deer eyes....those eyes that make everything personal and would probably be staring at me just before he ate them.

Sandy, I think the Williams family Christmas card this year may help you with this.
You just have to think of deer as dog food. Not deer-definitely not Bambi-just dog food. And have fun w/it. A little twisted humor never hurt anyone. Take a pair of front legs and do a little jig. Leave a head in the microwave and ask a coworker to grab your lunch for you. It's good for the soul.
