Should we let her have at least one litter before she gets fixed?
(I read that they make better PETS if they have one litter before fixing)
The answer is no. And good for you to ask!

My opinion is probably different from everyone. If you can't separate your female dog from male dogs for 2 years, I think you should get her fixed soon. Please don't think about breeding unless you know what you are doing.

I don't think anyone disagreed with that. Oops litters are absolutely not cute, not funny, not OK.
Virtually every one of those euthanized or shelter-crazed dogs we talked about earlier had a human somehow involved in it, either by deliberately breeding the dogs or by allowing an oops litter to happen.
MHO, along with the opinion of everyone I know who has done any shelter work at all.
I'm VERY glad the O.P. is asking first. :>

Yeah, "oops" litters are not that funny. If a person does not want to wait until age 2 or take the responsibility to separate the dog from others, then I think it is better to get it fixed now. I don't think accident litters are wroth to play around.

I think the big thing to remember is that he came here for help and advice, which to me, is a sign that he wants to do it correctly.
Which is a lot more than I can say for some others....who just want pups "cuz they are so stinking cute". UGH!!!!
And, he also wants some info on where to research the breed as well and so far, no one has offered him any insight.....I am not GSD savvy, so I am not going to even try......

Excellent points!
I'm a pretty good researcher, but I'm not sure about gender-specific breed info.
To the O.P.: If you mean GSDs in general, no problem. I got the impression that you meant females....

oops I misread the last sentence and did not see the female in there....
Mark
What book did you buy on GSD's? That may help. I am not sure there is much stuff on gender specific differences.......(okay....okay...except the obvious.. )
Would just GSD's in general work fo you?
Dang, Connie is fast.....see links above

I have a girl gsd german shephard and a male, we got them fixed I think at 6 months or before a year as the trainer told us and the vet suggested. We fixed them both because we have a male and female did not plan on breeding we wanted family pets. Both from the same father but different mother. Hope that helps.
