You not only erode your dog's trust in you, you create more reason for it to be afraid and nervous. This sounds like a recipe for disaster.
Title this How to: Create a Fear Biter
Table training anyone? :-p Though this article is about protection training and not directly about desensitizing nervous/shy/fearful dogs, this paragraph is still pertinent.
"When a dog is placed up on a table and attached to a very short chain it quickly realizes that all avenues of escape have been removed. Initially the helper stresses the dog and demands attention and aggression. If the dog turns his back on the helper or does not act aggressive enough the level of stress is increased until the dog is brought into fight. The dog quickly learns that if I don't show aggression I get the crap scared out of me and the safest place to be is on the sleeve." http://leerburg.com/tabletrain.htm
So while the dog is not being worked by a helper to purposefully induce a bite, a dog that is put into a situation where what it fears(people) is coming at it, all around it, and it cannot get away, will likewise learn that aggression makes the scary thing go away.
Does this trainer do bite/sport/protection training or is she an OB/behavior mod type trainer? I think she would benefit from a calm talking to and reading that article.

She owns a business that does all of the above. She primarily does the basic / intermediate / advanced OB stuff, she has two guys that do the protection work.
Well, I'm glad to hear that I wasn't alone in blanching at that suggestion. I'll have to talk to her. Actually, maybe I'll just get Jenni Williams on the phone and let her handle it for me.

Hmmm, seems I may be being made fun of....
Oh no, I was totally serious. I think Howard was too.

Well that first sentence had me laughing my butt off. In line to buy drinks at the Lakers game. The line was about 15 minutes and the drinks were insanely overpriced, so I needed a good laugh.
The second sentence is pretty much my lifes motto. I'm glad we agree on it.
I'm going to be talking to my trainer on Wednesday, hopefully she'll be able to listen to what I've got to say.
