I have to work during the day,
can I leave the puppy in the crate during the day while I am at work
How big the crate the puppy needs?
How long she can stay in the crate? 8 hour is OK.
Wei,
David is correct...leaving a pup crated for 8 hours at a time is not right.
Normal Rule of Thumb is as follows:
Continuous crate time for a young dog in number hours should be no more than it's age in months plus one:
ie, a 2 month old pup should not be crated more than 3 hours at a time: 2 months + 1 = 3 hours
ie, a 3 month old pup should not be crated more than 4 hours at a time: 3 months + 1 = 4 hours.
It goes without saying that formula is ONLY for very young puppies, not older dogs: ie, a 12 month old should NOT be in a crate continuously for 13 hours at a time!!
That borders on abuse...
PS Just curious....how does an unregistered poster get messages on this board?
Did you say where you keep the crate? I know that if I have my dog in the crate at the far side of the house, it's not good news. But if the crates in the room I am in, especially the bedroom at night, there is little or no problem after the first few days.
And I always act happy and excited when it's time to crate. Always go first to the treat bin and then, frankly, the dogs have usually disappeared because they tore ahead to crate themselves. Then I IMMEDIATELY leave the house calmly and quietly and with no long dramatic goodbyes. They go in the crate the last thing at night, and I also get in bed. And they go in the crate last thing before I leave for the day.
