Awesome pictures! Can you explain a little how this works? What is your involvement in the process, as in, are you guiding the dog? I am so interested in this whole thing, but I know just about nothing about it

Ingrid, we are horribly spoiled in Western Washington.
Ewetopia is fantastic, and they had quite a few judges available so we could run both legs today.
I still cannot get over how great Joe is with the dogs. He had Danke sized up before she ever set foot in the pen.
Luckily Danke doesn't seem to know where lambchops come from and was content to settle into a nice gathering-style of herding, with a lot of wearing and force barking. (Sorry... I just had to throw out my newly learned herding lingo, LOL)
I'm not sure how they came up with the HIC, or who it was sanctioned by, but they simply called the first leg the HIC, and the second leg the HCT. Who knows, maybe they were just being kind to folks who didn't make the second leg?
It was an AHBA sanctioned event, though.
My mom's Standard Poodle also certified, and she let her ittybitty 5 lbs bichon/toy poodle mix run on the ducks for fun.
People were pretty impressed that a Standard Poodle could herd (he loves to give chase).

Honestly, its all the dog.
I just stood there and let her make me look good, LOL.
Because it is a test of innate (genetic/instinctual) ability, I didn't have to do much.
I just took the dog in the pen and unhooked the leash when the judge told me to, after the sheep had been turned into the pen.
Danke had already started to creep towards the sheep and was eyeing them pretty fierce, so I just praised her and told her to go get 'em.
She crashed into the sheep (it was muddy) and then decided running *around* them instead of *at* them would prevent further collision, so she was content to do that.
The main goal is for the dog to keep the sheep grouped together, and encourage them to move in unison.
The sheep we were working on are very dog-broke, but they'll test the weaker dogs, so it was entertaining today. They wouldn't stay grouped at all for my mom's poodle, and he ended up chasing one straggler around for quite awhile.
Danke's problem was figuring out how to get them out of corners. She'd move them along the fence just fine, until a corner came along, and then all the barking and false charges in the world wasn't getting her anywhere.
In the second leg, you must be able to "pause" your dog, ie, stop the dog from MOVING the stock, and have the dog hold the stock in place. You must also be able to recall your dog from the stock.

Thank you for that! I guess I'm gonna have to get off my ass and get Loki solid on the commands I'm surprised there isn't better access to this kind of fun here in the country! Or I haven't been looking in the right places...

Commands?
Oh no... I just told Danke "easy" as a holding command, and just used an informal "c'mere pup pup pup" for the recall. (I really didn't want her to do a full recall and sit-front in all that mud... plus, it might have changed her attitude a little).
No, even my unruly, insane GSD did just fine.
Her scoresheet has written on the bottom, "A lot of dog".
They weren't talking size either. She's small for a GSD.
Obnoxiousness suddenly becomes an asset in herding.

Damn, I'm not welcome on facebook. I click on the links and keep getting my son's page and request for password? Alyssa, stop making moves on my son....LOL!! I'll have to have him access them for me.
I have been warned that any parent who goes on facebook is a weirdo and an embarrassment and........horror of horrors......will NOT be friended.
I digress and will return to the original topic as soon as I can access the pictures.

Hehehe, I'm liking this more and more I'm not even sure a casual recall would work, that's how bad it is. Can you sneak hot dogs into the ring? :P One more question, was this the first time you went herding with Danke or have you gone before, getting her used to it and such?

Nope, this was the first time Danke has ever seen sheep.
Believe it or not, even dogs with poor (or nonexistant) recalls will come when called in the ring.
Even though they are enjoying the sheep and themselves, there is *just* enough uncertainty in the dogs that they're happy to come when called.
You can call them as many times as you need to.
