And believe me, there's more where these came from. This board is loaded with recall info, and it's very good stuff.
Number one, to institute right away, is never to call the dog when you have any doubt at all about compliance and cannot reel her in. Every time you do that, the perception that the recall is optional is reinforced.
Please read the threads and then PLEASE come back with any and all questions. You will join the success stories.
And please remember that this is a puppy! Have fun! Make that recall a PARTY!
Just to make sure we are using the same terminology. Escape training is when a dog will do something to avoid correction as opposed to doing a task for a reward. IE training the dumbbell retrieve. I've seen it done both ways and can't see any reason to use compulsion for basicaly a trick but I have no objection to using compulsion to correct inappropriat aggression or recall.
I taught recall with long lines, toys and treats, I also used my voice as a marker, so when she did a task correctly she got an exaggerated "Yes" and reward and when she blew me off she got the other marker of "Pfui" and a pinch collar, later Ecollar, correction. I also tried to reward correct/desired action faster then the correction. eventualy I could tell when I gave her the correction word she would give me the "oh crap I screwed up" and the only correction required was just the harsh voice.
I made a game out of recall which helped quite a bit. one of the things I did was throw the ball, she's go after it and I'd call her back back, and throw the other ball in the other direction or I'd release her to get the first one.
