The "match" works on the simple idea that it gives the dog a feeling of not finishing it's job. In more simple words, the dog feels like it has a dingleberry hanging and pushes a bit to get rid of it. That stimulates the need to go.
I've done it a few times back when I showed in the breed ring.(Terriers, not those ASS dogs)
I never looked at it as stressful.
Heh is all I can say. Read to hubby bout the comment I made on the match stick and his reply was a look and "uh-huh" lmao. But Barbara I do agree with you though it would probably have to be a fire cracker. A bomb could blow over his head and he'd sleep through it. Elbows in the ribs though do work and the threat if Finn messes his crate I am not helping him clean it.
I think it's a plausible idea, but I'd go without something that involves splinters and sulfur! Q-tip sounded a little less likely to produce a new anecdote for the vet clinic staff!

I use the match stick trick. A hint since my little papillons hate getting their tootsies wet is to simply apply matchstick, pick them up and walk 30 feet, and set them down and don't let them go back to the house until business is done. The matchstick is the added incentive and going back inside can be the reward. Once it's done and you give the GOOOD PUPPY! head back to the house immediately.
I've started using the matchstick trick with my MinPin after she had a bout of diarrhea and got in the habit of messing her crate at night. I use the trick on our last walk of the evening - she "goes" every time and lasts through the night.
I've been inserting the sulphur end (dipped in vaseline) because it seems gentler (smooth and rounded) to insert - I hope that's ok - I figure the vaseline guards against any negative effects of the sulphur, if any and the stick is not in there long
But I like the tip of using a big tub or pool filled with something - maybe dirt or sod - for when it is raining. My pup is miserable out in the rain and I could put the container under the covered porch. I'll try it over the next few days (it's raining hard in BC now!) and report back.
