Great thread! As a note on Tramadol (which is what I am leaning toward for my guy on Metacam), my vet told me to watch out for the right dosing with it, because she even knows of a case where they were ready to put a dog down, because he was just stoned out of his mind. They stopped the Tramadol for 3 or so days first and then the dog was fine. It was just the accumulation of a possibly-incorrect dose of an opioid that was causing the dog to act weird lol.
So from my understanding, it's important to get the dose right on an individual basis as well, and watch for the signs of being overly stoned :-P
I'll through in a vote for Tramadol also. My seniors don't need it yet, at 12 years old Cali just ran in her first agility trial :-) But I have used it with some of the other dogs when recovering from an injury, and the difference was night and day, literally. The day I started the meds, the limp went away. It will definitely be my first choice when Cali does start needing some pain management in a few years.
