"I have one messed up tiny dog by blindly doing what I was told by a Vet - never again before checking here".
The majority of vets (not all) know a great deal about the health issues of a dog. Few know anything about feeding. Nutrition classes are taught in vet school by big named dog food manufacturers. Figure out what they push to feed your dog.
The next thing most vets know little about is training. If the individual doesn't have a good background in dog training pre his/her vet school then they learn absolute nothing about it in school. How to handle a dog/cat/etc in office or farm situations but that's about it.
Definitely not a knock on vets. Just a bit of reality.
Bob your statement made me stop and think about how what I wrote could be interpreted and it's not the whole of it - what I left out is my part in her ill health - her diet was deficient and I was not measuring her portions which caused her to weight more than she should.
I know that's not what you were referring too but your response led me to re-read what I wrote and I see my words as blaming my vet and that's unfair.
You are right when you speak about the lack of training vets receive and your words are put much better/fairer than mine. Thank you.
I played a role too, a big one - what I was feeding her was wrong - period. How much I was feeding her wrong - so I should have put that in my post too.
Thanks to what I learned from Connie, she is on her way to wellness. Thanks to so many others who are guiding me to ensure that Heiland lives up to his potential.
Single dose vaccines. They have Parvo and Distemper as separate vaccines and send a free syringe and needle with most of them. Vaccine needles are small enough that giving two shots isn't a big deal.
Alternatively you can call feed, tack, farm stores and ask if they carry vaccines. I'm not sure if they would carry anything other than the standard combo vax but it'd be worth calling.

Cathy, THANK YOU! I spent quite a while searching for singles yesterday (unsuccessfully).
Dr. Dodds returned my email, as well, with two-way:
"Dear Connie : Hello ! The only 2-way D + P vaccine available today is Merck's Nobivac DPV (the former Intervet Progard DPV, when Merck and Intervet merged). Single parvovirus and distemper vaccines are available from NeoTech (NeoPar and NeoVacc - D). These vacines can be purchased from on-line catalogs. The Nobivac product is only sold in 25 dose packages. Best regards, Jean."
(I want to add that Dr. Dodds took the time to reply while on vacation in another country. )
I called and spoke to the Vet's office this morning. What is in the 4-way according to the receptionist is the following;
D - distemper - H - adeno virus - parainfluenza - parovirus
No kennel cough is there?
Anyway - that is all I can get at the vets - not sure what to do as I don't want to leave him unprotected too long.
I appreciate the responses to my question (thank you Cathy for doing the research) and I will call the feed stores to check.
Am I understanding it correctly from what you wrote Connie (imagine Dr. Dodds taking time to get back to you on her vacation? - really appreciate you doing that) that I would have to order the 2 way in a large batch?

I think yes, it's a large batch.
I am hoping to hear opinions here on the influenza vax.
I assumed it had to be Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus, because it's the only 4-way puppy vax mentioned anywhere. (Hepatitis = adenovirus.) It's commonly called DHPP.
It made no sense that bordetella (kennel cough) would be in there.
I called around the feed stores and all they have is a 5 way and a 7 way vacs for pups - I didn't ask what was in them as it doesn't matter - from what I am learning here I know that 5 & 7 are not the numbers I want to hear for the vacs.
What should I do next please? I know that you experienced ppl have already looked online so that doesn't seem to be an option.

If you're set on wanting the 2 in 1 you can order the large batch($70 plus shipping ouch!)and advertise to raw feeding networks, holistic groups, breeders, etc and possibly sell the rest. I don't know the legality of that but I can't see where it would be a problem unless you live in Minnesota or it's a rabies vax. Or you can just order the parvo and distemper vaccines($10 plus shipping) and give two shots.
I think I've heard that you're not supposed to mix seperate vaccines into one shot due to possible additive interactions.
Call around to holistic vets and see if they carry the 2 way? Lots of people have more than one vet. My parents have a close and lower cost vet they use for routine stuff, an excellent orthopedic vet to get very nice digital x-rays, and a non-specialist vet for the frequent lump removals one of their dogs requires.
Thank you very much Cathy and Connie. I will wait for what you find out Connie and if it can't be gotten that way, I will look into buying the batch and selling what I don't need.
