Logan could barely get into his crate to go tot the vet. When I got there I had to help him down and wasn't sure he could walk into the building, we went real slow. He pee'd right before going in and his pee was dark and bloody. I was pretty freaked out by then because my dog Sport had Lyme nephritis and acted just like him and had blood in her pee.
As soon as I got inside Logan laid down in the floor, very lethargic. He had gone downhill so fast it was scarey!!! The vet did blood work right away and was concerned about renal failure and even poisoning. His abdomen was very painful and he was dripping blood. The rate that he got very sick was so scarey (I know I already said that).
His blood work came back mostly very good accept he had an infection. I was glad it wasn't poisoning or renal failure and the vet did a prostate exam to find out if it was that, a severe bladder infection or bladder stones.
Turns out Logan has a very enlarged prostate and all this time that's why he was so painful in his rear end. I still don't know about the issue with his front for sure, its fine now so maybe the chiropractor was right, she thought it was from his neck being out of alignment.
So now he's on an Carprofen and sulfamethoxazle/trimethoprim to treat it and go from there, hoping this will work. He is going to have to get neutered after he recovers so it won't happen again.
As awful as he feels I am glad its something temporary and he's going to be ok. Right now he's having chicken and rice and lots of attention.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.

Oh my God, how awful.
Hasn't he had terribly painful poops?
Is he at home? How is he doing with the Rimadyl? Did you get tramadol or anything in case he needs more than the NSAID?

'Dogs with painful prostates will often walk abnormally. They are attempting to keep anything from riding against or putting pressure on the swollen, painful gland. Their rear legs will be stiff and straight at the knee and hock and they will usually take very short steps. Some owners refer to this as 'walking on eggs.' '
He hasn't had any problems pooping at all, he acted normal about it. And wasn't anywhere near this bad until today...he went downhill literally in hours, it freaked me out.
He's at home and they didn't recommend anything else for pain. I kind of wondered about that and I wish I had asked. He still hurts an awful lot I guess I'll have to get the vet to call in some tramadol at the pharmacy in the morning....I hate to make him wait but its a long drive up there and I have to borrow a car.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
The inflammation must have gone down, he is peeing without too much problem today. He will eat if I sit next to him on the porch and he has been keeping everything down. He is still so sore and doesn't want to walk, he won't even pay attention to his favorite prey (egrets). I called about tramadol and they said I'd have to go all the way back up there to get it. They said I should wait and that the carprofen should take care of it but I disagree because its not.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
