Have you discussed Tramadol?
BTW, I totally agree with Betty (about pot and dogs), and would not have said I'd do it (even with my circumstances outlined) if it had not been for this:
"The cannabis given to pets is treated and administered in a way that does not make them high, Dubois reported."
I would be very VERY hesitant to subject a dog to a med that might trigger confusion, anxiety, and even panic, because of the dog's possible perception of brain, sensory, and physical unreliability. To me, from what I have read and observed, being "high" for a dog can be as bewildering and confusing and scary as Atzheimer's can be to a human.
This completely changes my POV:
"The cannabis given to pets is treated and administered in a way that does not make them high, Dubois reported."

I wasn't thinking about it for Kasey! He's not in any pain or anything as far as I can tell. I was just curious what people on here thought about giving pot to a dog. I'm with you Connie, it would have to be that my dog was going through treatment for some disease or something and was having trouble with eating and/or drinking - then maybe, maybe, I'd try it (if I could figure out how to get it!)
I thought Betty's post was really interesting - about how dogs don't like to be high. It makes a lot of sense because that would probably make them feel vulnerable and out of control - not something an animal would desire. Good point!

(...) I can't think of anything dogs do to "get high" on their own (...)
There is....BACON. The min-pin gets glazy crazy eyed when the word is mentioned.
If you don't talk to your dog about bacon, who will?

marijuana/hemp has served mankind well for over 5000 years .
about 100 years ago big business figured out they will lose a lot of money if the general populace can provide their own medicine , as well as other applications , for free .
legitimate scientific research has been quashed for many years now for reasons stated above , but recently has experienced a resurgence as new thinking about the plant and its' benefits to man begins to take root .
one of the findings is that it is not only the active ingredient THC ( which produces the " high " ) that has some benefits for some users , but a compound known as CBD that is responsible for the documented positive results .
there are now strains of cannabis being produced that have very little THC and higher percentages of CBD .
there are many cases of humans finding relief and/or cure using marijuana when all other modern (?) medicines have failed , i can't see any reason why dogs might not benefit from the same .

Exactly! I read about cannabidiol just this past summer, in fact.

Interestingly I find that this is arguing in favor of legalization without going too far off topic. Making it legal to use as medicine has allowed for more scientific study of the active components, as opposed to 'how well does this particular plant make my brain banana go squish?' Huh.

I personally think pot should be legalized, I am not anti-pot. Perhaps it would be useful for glaucoma, for separation anxiety, for a whole lot of things.
I'm sure veterinarians who live in states were marijuana usage is more common would have intelligent things to report about pot+your dog.
Here in Minnesota, it's still the Stone Age regarding marijuana.

i get your point betty but it is funny / ironic you mention the " stone age " ( no pun intended ) , because they were probably a lot more foreward thinking and practical back then . . . you had to use whatever you had at hand , and if it worked you used it .
obviously there was trial and error with possibly catastrophic failures but it almost seems like a waste of all that early " research " to turn our backs on it in these " modern " times .
