Hello all.
Sorry for no reply until now
Thank for the replies. I do not plan on using the e-collar to teach or as a punishment to correct the dog when not complying with basic commands. I only plan on using it to reinforce what we have already worked on and what she already knows. Hopefully as a reminder.
I do however plan on using it on rare occasions to hopefully eliminate dangerous behavior such as jumping on counters (including our stove as that could have devastating results if hot).
Does anyone know of a good e-collar trainer in California's Central Valley that can make sure she is conditioned correctly to the collar and someone I can work with to make sure I'm using it the most appropriate way?

My personal FAVE is:
http://leerburg.com/318.htm
Michael Ellis operates one of THE TOP dog training schools in America right here in Northern California, but I think you can easily learn how to "get control" of your young Lab by mastering the art of Marker Training...
START HERE:
http://leerburg.com/219.htm
Sending your PET dog away to a board & train facility is generally both unnecessary & not recommended -- But I trust that other posters here with more experience than I have will also offer their expert advice ... Bottom Line: what you're seeking to accomplish is very do-able, IMHO
P.S. I've trained my Borzoi and my Akita, and now my 2 rescue Dobermans (adopted as adults) using these DVDs even though I'm just an Amateur PET Owner!
I really LOVE my:

Sorry I mistook your Registration Date for the time of your 1st post, Steve, my bad...
Hope you will really check out the DVD links I listed above -- Ed Frawley's will teach you HOW TO condition your dog to the e-collar, and HOW TO use the Lowest Stim for the BEST RESULTS ... Also, the Michael Ellis dog training school in Santa Rosa is truly THE GREATEST one around, but I'm afraid that "down in the valley" all you would find are hard-boiled Hunting Dog trainers who typically use a HIGH-LEVEL / CONTINUOUS-STIM obsolete & cruel Avoidance Method to "shock-the-shite" out of your pup

Thanks all. I have heard enough to pass on Sit Means Sit. I will not be taking my dog to any of their programs.
Doesn't sound like anyone has any good recommendations for a good e-collar trainer near me. I assume this means there aren't any?
So, I'm thinking about possibly starting things myself. I decided to purchase both of Michael Ellis' On Demand Video on this site ("The Electronic Collar with Michael Ellis" part 1 and 2):
I'll watch them again and post back some questions I might have.
Thanks all.

Steve,
If you can make it to Santa Rosa for 2 days to take Michael's ecollar class, I highly recommend you do it. Especially since you are in no rush/need to use the collar. Not only do you get all your questions answered, but you get hands on training using the collar. Some dogs adapt really easily and understand what it means while others shut down; if that happens it's best to have someone like ME train you through it. Having the option of an ecollar gives you tons of freedom, being crippled because you messed up at the beginning sucks. Good luck :-)

i guess steve didn't make it to this class because it started today and there was only us six immersion students in attendance .
really too bad because there is a lot of information being discussed . i've never been around e-collars and while i am not anti , it just never really occurred to me to be a piece of equipment i would consider , probably because i've worked with border collies and have never felt it to be necessary .
now that i am planning to train other peoples' dogs i can see just how useful they could be , and i have to say , michaels' approach is to train the dog so that you might never have to use it , but if you do it is better to lay the groundwork before you need it so that if it does become one of the tools to train the dog , it will be better received and a more effective tool for the dog .

"By George, I think he's GOT it!"
I go all the way through Learning, Distraction & Corrections, proofing obedience ON-LEAD while Conditioning the dog to Wearing its E-COLLAR WITHOUT any stimming -- Then when I'm ready for Off-Lead proofing at a DISTANCE that's when I begin the actual Remote System training, determining the LOWEST effective Stim-Level per dog ... Thanks to this approach "it goes like butter" and the whole point is NEVER needing to USE that Stim Button at all
It succeeded perfectly on my Borzoi and my AKITA, two breeds that were purposely created to work Independently of a Handler and out of the hunters' sight (consequently when off-lead, they naturally run off to drum up the odd Wolf or Bear, satisfying many centuries of that inbred DRIVE heedless of "silly" obedience commands) -- But they both Respected the E-Collar as an "invisible leash" and were always Obedient Off-Lead as if being LEASHED yet WITHOUT needing any STIM ... Thank you, Ed Frawley !!!
