From what i have read on this board show line dogs suck. He does pretty good work, but he was sold to me as a police dog prospect, and when you are expecting something and then you dont get what you are promised it is a bummer.
While it is a bummer I'm sure, German show line dogs are not bad. You can get a pretty nice dog, just don't think you're gonna get a working gem. The majority of time this will not happen.(Notice I said "majority" Pete! ) I know you are bummed but you probably have a pretty good dog. Remember, the key word here is GERMAN show line.
Eric, my only consolation to you is that at least you didn't end up with MY showline dog (she's what a showline dog is supposed to be, but not anything more ). She's my first and last showline animal.

Hope I didn't upset anyone knocking my OWN showline fluffball . Or maybe it's the Latin in the signature. I hated taking it too (didn't do the second year bad, bad me) LOL.

I have to agree with Pete. I have a Lasso vom Neuen Berg grandson that is an extremely powerful, hard dog. He is very dominant and handler hard. He is very serious and correct in all phases of his work. I have seen a lot of show dogs that suck. With saying that, I have seen a lot of working dogs that suck and lately a lot of Mals that are a waste of good kennel space (I have been through some). I currently compete with a very strong Mal and my show dog. IMO its not the training in the dog...its the dog in the training!
While he is not a bad dog, he does do prety good bite work, and he is very good on the obedience end of things, he is just to damn stable. He does not see anything as a threat. I have read plenty on defense in dogs and that some dogs just are not sharp enough to do pp work. Oh well, my wife likes him so I guess we will keep him, after all she is the boss.
Are you saying that his defensive threshhold is too high? I've seen that problem in some of the working lines too (go ahead and whang me for that, VanCamp ). In fact, these days it seems that a lot of the show lines have lower defensive threshholds than the working lines.
Way to high. Anyone one in the world can break into my house with this dog in there. When doing bite work this dog is all about prey, even when backed into a corner by the bad guy. You gotta be moving to get this dog to bite. When he does bite it is a full deep bite and he holds and does not rebite. We have tried him on the suit and he would try to just hit the arm, he absolutely would not bite the leg, even when put in front of his face.
