There is currently a shortage of explosive detector dogs down range, so when a bomb dog gets back from deployment, they are put on a new handler and sent back as soon as they are trained. It's all about saving lives, and I totally agree with this practice. Fama needs to be finding bombs, not hanging with me in Hawaii, no matter how "right" that would be for her.
Dead on...It is about saving lives, and as David has previously stated, to the Army, Fama is a piece of equipment.
Thanks to David, the trainers have seen how Fama can be handled. She probably wasn't introduced to her current handler the same way she was handed over to him, although some necessary precautions probably were issued. Using this experience, they may be able to select a proper handler, and it's just possible that the next guy may feel the same way David does. Things have a way of working themselves out, and , IMHO, David has set Fama up for success.
Hat's off, brother.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I am really enjoying reading this and would be honored to own a copy of your book someday. I know it's more than good enough to be published and I can't wait to see it on the shelves as the next best seller.
Thank you also for your service and for working with what started out as a very difficult dog. It's awe inspiring what the two of you managed to accomplish. The bond you two share is a beautiful thing.
Your talent with dogs, especially Fama, and your talent for writing with humor and the obvious love and pride you have for Fama shows a devotion and compassion that is becoming far too rare.
Ok, I'm ready for more. lol

Yes, I want one too! Definitely. And Fama's autograph along with yours, David, would be a great bonus if it could be arranged.
We don't want much, do we? LOL

I think she will have a much easier time with her new handler than she did with me. She really is a different dog now. I am looking forward to writing about the transformation we went through as a team that lead to her taking a back seat in the aggression / defense role. It was interesting to go through, and helped me understand dogs on a more basic level. She will be fine with her next handler, as long as he is not fearful of her.

I love the bite marks on the cover idea. I think I will use that for sure.
And yes, there will be copies for the LBers with paw prints inside the cover

Fama had one previous deployment with a civilian contractor that ended with her being sent back home due to aggression issues. She hurt a guy pretty bad. Her previous handler is a great guy, but never got down to the reason she was aggressive. He just tried to deal with the and result of her insecurity, which was aggression, not the root of the problem. She is a much more confident dog now, who doesn't need to fight. She is OK in her own skin.

Were you told about Fama's background when you got her? I'm sure your background in training dogs helped a lot when working to get her over her issues. Do the other handlers have dog training backgrounds? Do the handlers do much training of the dogs or are the dogs ready to go when you get them?
