Jennifer, my GSD, Hans, is a one dog neighborhood watch. He sees, smells and hears everything (not necessarily in that order)and feels compelled to investigate. Or bark his head off. So I'm thinking that Teagan is just doing what comes naturally.
Camping with Teagan and Luc doesn't sound much different from when we took our kids camping years ago. My wife would stuff our son in her sleeping bag with her (because he was always warm and she was always cold) and I'd have our daughter next to me. Don't think I'd want to stuff a GSD into a sleeping bag with me though
melissa, you haven't had any problems with dogs sleeping outside? i think i'd pick teagan to be outside, not luc (he'd probably be attacked by a chickadee or dragonfly), obviously she'd be unmuzzled, but i worry about her being tethered when i'm not supervising.
i think part of their issues could be that they might both be a bit possessive of me/of being around me. which probably isn't great. luc growled at teagan tonight! luc! he was sitting next to me and teagan came around to 'his' side. she wasn't impressed, so to speak, but i stepped in immediately and put them both into downs away from me and ignored them for a few minutes (was that right?) and they were fine. a few minutes later they quite happily engaged in some intimate sniffing (sigh) and smacking of teagan's head w/luc's foot, all was well in luc and teagan-land again. anyways, maybe something similar happens in the tent, but i'm not awake to step in, and luc finds himself over his head w/respect to backing up his growl, and teagan's reactions? i guess i won't know unless i fake sleep....

No... I've not had any problems with large dogs sleeping outdoors that weigh more than the average coyote. Anything under 25 lbs I wouldn't leave outdoors so in my house the lab is fine, the cocker spaniel and papillons sleep with me.
Usually my lab feels pretty comfortable in this arrangement tied to an around the tree tether. Of course her favorite place to sleep is in the nearest mud puddle.
