I would skip the chicken for the first few meals, waiting to see if the stools firm up, then if they do you can add a small amount of chicken.
For overcooked rice I use 1/3 too much water and cook it down until its soupy and the rice is like mush. You can add more liquid at the end if you need to in order to make it mush.
I like to replace some of the water with no salt added chicken broth for flavor. Or you can boil some skinless chicken in with the rice and then take it out before feeding it. Then save the chicken in the fridge to add in later.
Yes I would add yogurt or kefir to his diet as well, a little bit at a time, like maybe 1/2 tablespoon to start.
LOL. We have the same protocol. And the same typing timing.

When Cali had an inflamed tummy (diarrhea) from giardia , my vet put her on the "potato diet" until things settled down. He said it is the best remedy they have ever come across--and it worked.
This also sounds very interesting. I can't speak to it because I haven't read about it or tried it, but potato does have some binding quality.
Talked to the vet today, he wants to take a look at another stool sample to make sure the spyrochetes(?) are gone. You guys should be vets because his next advice was to give a bland diet. Thanks all so much for the help and I am sure the puppy is thankful as well

How did the dog(s) take to it?
I made some goat milk mashed potatos a couple years ago mixed with some boiled burger after my dogs had a bad reaction to a can of mackeral. It went over alot better with my dogs than pumpkin and yep... solid poo resulted. In a pinch I'm told you can use the rehydrated potatos with plain water for the same results.
Connie--
To answer your question, Cali, my now only dog, loved the potato diet. Then again, she is a Lab. She'd be licking her chops with that gleam in her eye. What can I say? Being finicky is not her style.
One thing I meant to mention is that my vet recommends starting with the potato diet, and if the dog refuses that then try the the rice as many here described. Then move to rice and chicken. He swears the taters/turnip settle things down more quickly--but really, I'm sure either approach is perfectly fine. Just wanted to throw that option out there FYI. You can just add it to your arsenal of information that may help someday.
I had to check back in here to see how this puppy is doing. Any better, Dale?
When my dog had this, it lasted a couple days.
What I did was the bland rice, with a teaspoon of pumpking with some chicken.
Then every day, add a little more dog food.
Also I made the rice more water-y, to keep her hidrated.
So I decided to give this diet a try. She had kibble in the morning and her second meal was rice. She refused to eat the rice. She was then constipated for the night and this morning also. I just tried to give her rice and pumpkin again but she doesn't seem to like it so she wont even touch it. I am going to add chicken broth and hope it helps. Should I be worried about the constipation? She has tried to go twice now with nothing....

She's constipated and all she has eaten is kibble? (Rice is not a diet for constipated, by the way, so you can toss the rice.)
