Perhaps not labeling a contest.....just videos that show different ways of training the same behavior. I think that would generate a host of new paradigms for beginners like me. Sometimes I need to be more creative in thinking how to do something differently when an approach isn't working. Then a lightbulb will go off in my head...."oh yeah...placement of the reward is important, too." I seem to re-remember that one often
That was kind of the idea behind the year long training resolution talked about in this thread Who is up for a training resolution? .
Something that could be a fun sharing of the ideas, training and results. Something didn't need to be anything huge and you could train along no matter what level you and your dog were at.
I plan on starting a new thread each month to talk about and showcase the behaviors we are training for the month.

I also think the deadline and feedback are good motivation to train! I think it's all in good fun, and I hope that nobody would be upset about not "winning".
Yes!!!
I am a very competitive person. Turn something into a challenge or competition and I up my game. It just automatically happens. It challenges me to think outside the box, to improve on what I've done the last time around.
One thing I thought was neat this time around was to see how people/dogs had improved since last time. I was very impressed by the way everyone upped their game - you could tell that people had really been thinking and working on bringing out the best in their dog and their training. I think a bit of friendly competition really helps with this. I know it does for me.

I think the monthly training resolution will help big time, in building our confidence and getting everyone involved in training on a regular basis, regardless of our skill levels.
If we contine to do the "contest" and I suspect we will at least once or twice more (while tweaking it), the monthly resolutions will probably make a big difference in the amount of participants. I know my confidence grew from the first contest to the second, and I expect the same will happen with the folks training something new each month.

OK, how about this? I really like the feedback idea (from other members). How about asking for a panel of 3 (or whatever number) volunteers to provide feedback for each video submitted? The panel could change for each contest...
Feedback would be given prior to voting...
If the video was submitted early enough, the contestant could implement the suggestions if they wanted to, and post a final version...

I think we should just continue with the contest - maybe have a couple behaviours to choose from or a couple experience levels. If you don't want to "compete" or be "judged"... go on over the resolution thread. Or, post the video in the forum for opinions. To be honest I think some of us really like the added "push", and why should we stop in fear that someone might be hurt or offended that their video wasn't liked? I think the prizes were a sweet perk, and the deadline a good motivator. I should think that everyone understands the premise of a competition, if you can't take the heat - get outta the kitchen!
I really hope that doesn't offend anyone, but could a competitive event be any more lighthearted and supportive than the ones we've already had?
Unless I'm totally oblivious to something going on, is this really an issue?

Nope, nothing going on. I received two PMs saying they loved the videos but didn't vote in fear of hurting someone's feelings, which got me wondering how prevelant that feeling might be - since we normally don't get that many folks voting.
Your point that a competition is a competition and if you can't take being "judged" don't participate, is a good one! LOL!

Well, perhaps we could approach it from a different angle - private voting? People submit their votes to you via PM?

Zackly. And this is coming from a team that only got 1 vote!
I just don't see the voting thing as an issue...
And I don't think the voting should be done by pm, either...

Shoot... for a brief moment I saw an incredible winning streak in Falcon's future!!! LOL!
IF we did private voting, it would be with two people being sent the votes. That is how it was handled when people were offering to contribute funds for the prizes for the first contest...I asked folks to send both me AND Connie a PM saying how much they were contributing so that I was not the only person in the "moola" loop.
