I can see both sides. There are different schools of thought. As I said, I'd never heard that before I started working with the SchH club and this particular trainer, and I'm no spring chicken. After I heard his rationale, I could see the other trainer's point, as well. There's another thread that is currently active that has several descriptions of people being dragged, yanked off their feet, etc.
Personally, I think some dog owners/handlers are not best paired with a dog that can overpower them, and I can understand that a policeman is probably able to control a large, lunging dog.

My favorite leashes are three identical ones I acquired around 25 years ago when I attended my first dog training classes. They were handmade by the owner of the training facility, who was a police K-9 handler. They're roughly five feet long, with a sturdy snap, made out of latigo leather around 3/4 inch wide (narrower now with age). The way the leashes are made, the handle end is braided into a slip knot. Yep, I'm one of those who tightens the leash around my wrist.
I really like the tactile feedback I get using these leashes to communicate with my dogs. They are soft and supple and have just the right amount of weight to them. These are the leashes I always use for going out in public or going for a walk.
For training and trialing purposes, I use very similar latigo leashes of varying lengths, depending on what I'm doing. Main difference is they are much thinner, around 3/8 inch.
My long line when I use one is made of cotton webbing, 5/8 inch.

Moot point for me considering that my dog weighs 15 lbs., but a leash is for keeping a dog out of trouble and giving the owner a physical tie to the dog.
I mean think about all the various reasons you use a leash. To keep dog out of traffic. To keep dog from running away. To keep dog from attacking something. Etc., etc.
What I'm getting at is a shoulder injury, or a small lady getting knocked on her ass is better than the alternative. It's what leashes are for.
Mike;
I have only had my first working dog for 15 months, two weeks, and five days. In that time, one of the things that I have gleaned is that the only real control a handler of a working dog has is the obedience that stems from a solid relationship with their dog (Police dogs are an exception; many of them are hard for even the best handlers to control, and there are dogs that can ignore even an ecollar correction). No tool can give a true sense of security. Being able to put my reactive timebomb in a "down" four feet from another dog that she would rather attack gives me a far greater sense of control than being tied to her ever could.
ALSO, as I've previously alluded to, if it comes down to the well-being and safety of my dog or that of my mother or son or wife, the dog is gonna come up last EVERY time. I will never value the life of my dog or ANY other animal over that of even the lowliest human being, or that of the general welfare.

Oh, and I forgot to give my plug for Leerburg's leather leashes and collars.
Love 'em. You can't bust 'em.

Best leash I have ever owned, is the two handle Amish leash LB sells.
Before I bought this exact leash, I had spent a lot of money on nylon leashes, and the hardware kept breaking! Nylon was also too slippery for me, no grip.
You just can't beat the quality, solid brass hardware, and supple leather, which allows for good grip. I love the double (shorter handle) for when I need the dog close to me.
It is the best money I have ever spent, and I can see this lasting a lifetime.

What I'm getting at is a shoulder injury, or a small lady getting knocked on her ass is better than the alternative. It's what leashes are for.
And, speaking from personal shoulder injury experience, there's nothing like having a 90 lb dog pulling hard at the end of a longish leash or long line to royally mess up a shoulder. Much better control when the leash is shorter. Mike Arnold, I like the idea of a loop close to the dog's head. Doesn't mean you have to use it all the time, but it's there when you need it...
