I would love to get a taser, but only the police are able to use them here.
Is it allowed elsewhere?
Yes it's allowed but not the first choice for an animal attack. They're hard to hit a small fast moving target with. I would think of using something like a bb gun before a taser.
Has anyone ever tried water and vinegar? I take a small water bladder with a spray top with me on walks - half vinegar half water. I've never had to use it, it seems that whenever we encounter dogs I've left it at home!
I like the idea of a bamboo stick, my dog would probably even carry it for me

Hey.. a bamboo stick!! I remember getting switched with that as a kid if I ran into the road! Even those thin ones sting like crazy!
I am going to explore that. It is much lighter than my steel pipe which bangs against my leg as I walk.
Kristin, I am in the US, but taser's are still forbidden here except for law enforcement.
Tasers and stun guns (two different things) are legal in 42 states:
The following states consider stun guns illegal:
Hawaii
Illinois
Massachusetts
New Jersey
New York
Rhode Island
U.S. Virgin Islands
The following cities/counties also consider stun guns illegal: Annapolis, MD; Baltimore, MD; Crawford County, IA; District Of Columbia; Philadelphia, PA.
A stun gun is used when you are right next to the thing you want to touch, so you have to wait until the dog or person is upon you. A taser shoots out 15 feet on average to hit the attacker before they get close to you (if you can aim correctly!). I'm told by my K-9 officer friend, that some dogs will respond simply to the noise if you do it before they get to you. Others will respond only if you get them on the nose with the electricity. Like all other things, there are pros and cons.
When I did animal control we didnt use pepper spray, it didnt faze dogs who were revved up and too many other factors. We carried "bite sticks" which were expandable batons and quite effective not because we hit the dog but just pointing it and saying no, was enough to stop most aggressive dogs.
My animals are not "like" family, they ARE family.
