Hey all, good news. I just got an e-mail indicating that the puppy doesn't have parvo. There was a complete blood work up done as well. I have to wait a few days to get the rest of the results of her checkup. I am so relieved.

Ah! Relief! So, will you be vaccinating your new pup with a super-duper-combo vac?
So happy for you! When can you get your new little one?

Rub the salt into the wound, Jen. lol. I will admit I am to be held responsible for what happened to that puppy because I believed all that was given was the normal routine. If I knew about weak immune systems, deworming, and side effects of combo vaccines, things would have been done differently. This was a wake up call for sure.
Now that I have experienced the worst that can happen, paranoia has set in for the next dog that enters my life. That is no joke. I will be paying more attention to the health sections of various dog forums so I know exactly what my dog is getting and why. The general public just does whatever the vet says because we believe they know what they are doing and can do no wrong.

I thought the rescue insisted on those shots? I wasn't really blaming you, Denise.
And you CANNOT say "we believe they know what they are doing and can do no wrong," after listening to my rants on the phone several months ago . Unless, you just blew me off as crazy!?! Denise, did you blow me off as crazy? I am very disappointed and saddened by this recent turn of events.

The shots were necessary, but things could have been done differently. The rescue really only wanted the rabies done, but somebody offered to do the worming and 1st puppy shots for free. If I was more knowledgeable about side effects, the shots and deworming would have been spread out more timewise. Unfortunately, from what I hear, parvo is prevalent here in GA, so the shots were done.
The whole time I had the puppies I thought it was my fault that the dog got "parvo" because I had taken them for a walk around the block (street only) and let them walk in grass in an unpopulated area the day I got them. I beat myself up for days for all this.
Jennie, I do not think you are crazy at all. In fact I respect you very much for the knowledge you share here on the forum. That's why you can expect your PM box to be filled with questions later when I get a dog. lol.
The "we" I was referring to was myself and those who do not take advantage of the forums available on the internet to become more informed consumers.

I was just kidding b/c I know I probably come off as a total raw feeding/anti-vaccine Nazi on the forums...but even worse on the phone! I'm sure I came off strong when we were talking about the "X" litter.

From my own personal experience, vets definitely use vacinations as a money-making tool...just got a "reminder" in the mail that Brenna needs some multi-vaccine---she's nearly a year old now---right on schedule.
uh, yeah...that ain't happenin'
I got a short lecture after my first visit to my vets to finish her first and only multi-vaccine which her kennel owner started before I got her and had the rabies/parvo junk in it because I told her that I would not be doing anymore vaccines except rabies.
Don't be bullied to do something you don't want to do or don't fully understand...that's the bottom line, I think.

Reminders are great that your dog may need something but ultimately you make the decision to go in.
I used to live in California almost 10 years ago and they gave rabies shots good for 3 years. Here in GA, it's supposed to be done annually. Makes no sense to me because you rarely hear about a rabies incident here. I don't see any difference from one state to another. I do not allow my pets to roam free at will either and the only wildlife we have in our fenced in backyard are birds and an occasional squirrel because there is no dog to keep them out. Makes me think I really don't need a rabies shot either.

Denise, I know there are alot of views here on vaccines but for me, I will continue the rabies shots because Brenna could find a dead squirrel or mouse infected and eat it...that's just me.
