Yep, I like the standard poodles too but I could never have a white one. My neighbor breeds Maltese and her dogs are always "dingy" looking when she slacks on the grooming. I had a mix rescue dog this summer, she had pups and one of them was piebald, and his white spots were always turning greyish. I'm just not a meticulous enough groomer.
One of my dog trainers has two black standard poodles, littermates, that she competes in obedience with. They are so attentive to her. Nice dogs too. Everyone says poodles are high-strung, nervous and snappy but her dogs are calm and obedient. Somewhat aloof to strangers too which I like.
I think that the toys can be high strung and nervous but I'm not sure how much of that is training and they way they live with their dogs and how much is the breed. A lot of the min pins, chihuahuas and other tiny dogs all act the same way, so I really think that's got a lot to do with the way they were raised. You know, when small dogs are dominant it's "cute."
My dog will wag her tail at a stranger who greets her, give her a little sniff and then go back to watching my next move.
