What I would probably do:
Finish the med and get a derm vet referral (could be non-confrontational if you decide to keep Vet #1 for uncomplicated stuff; could say "This keeps recurring and I want a derm specialist to culture the skin after the protocol") for after it's done.
That's almost verbatim what my wife and I just discussed on the phone. Creepy.
Price is never the deciding factor, but I would be lying if I said it didn't come into play. The old vet cost twice as much for an office visit. He always had an antibiotic or a steroid in the holster, ready and willing to draw it.
This current vet is the opposite. In most cases when we've had to visit, this was a HUGE plus. He isn't an overdoer, which I like. With this current problem, though, it is a fault.
I guess I'll have to play it by ear when any problems arise with my dogs. Ask myself, "Does this problem need an aggressive approach, or will the local vet's passive approach do?".
